If you interested in maybe having the option to travel to the gramps/araps by train again

You should fill in this survey

Sounds good Dave J. Filled in already.

Who has organised the survey and behind trying to get the train service reinstated?

The survey's being organised by the Wimmera Regional Skills Program and the Horsham Council are also pushing the train project along with the Northern Grampians Shire.
One of the big issues we have is a change in rail gauge at Ararat. The line from Ballarat, where the faster passenger train operates, is still broad gauge but from Ararat to Horsham is the interstate standard-gauge line which doesn't go to Ballarat but to Geelong instead.
When the lines were standardised in the 90s it was considered "too expensive" to do the lines through Ballarat. Even the high-speed rail project upgrade kept the Ballarat line as broad gauge.
So, we're still living with the consequences of pre-federation parochialism and continued short-sighted penny-pinching. Mark Twain would find it familiar.

Australia totally farked it when it came to national rail. Right since the beginning.

Actually it was only Victoria (5 feet 3 inches) and NSW (4 feet 8 1/2 inches) who stuffed it up, all other states (and the Northern Territory) were 3 feet 6 inch gauge.

The change in gauge means that, if the trains return, passengers will have to change trains at Ararat. Or, jack the train up and change wheels.

I'd prefer to change to a train at Ararat than the current change to a vomit inducing bus.

Did I understand correctly what you said earlier and there's a line from Horsham all the way to Geelong that's the same gauge? What towns does it go through? Does it actually get in to Melbourne or does it terminate at Geelong?

It's the western standard gauge line. Goes Ararat - Maroona - Tatyoon - ViteVite and similar major destinations to Geelong. It's the route taken by the Overland.

Exactly where it was happening in the beginning. :)
