didnt the chinese put a ladder on one of the "step" on the northern route some 20 years ago and is still used by nearly all people . I remember reding that someone trying to prove whether it was possible for mallory to have climbed everest move the ladder went up then replaced the ladder

Conrad Anker in 'Ghosts of Everest' p.148. He knee barred / arm jammed the off width crack to the left of the ladder, to prove that Mallory could have "just knee-barred up that off-width and then just pulled over"

A ladder on Mt Everest.. meh... there's fixed lines.. and if it gets more punters up there safely.. well who's going to argue with the Sherpas? It's not like your onsiting... Maybe they could install some more steps .. carve out some waiting areas.. I'm sure Maccas would be interested in some special stall at base camp while we they're there?

Seriously who is arguing whith Sherpa (as a stereotype) no one wants a rock on the head and who wants to stand in the way of money, safety and opening up the region. Seriously this is thes guys greatest NP/walk and there is an opportunity to extract tourist dollars - go for it
