I've only ever been in spring and autumn so what's it like in high summer? Is the Pines deserted? Are there better options in the Grampians?

Xmas day at Araps is quite nice, very few tents.
I reckon I counted only about 8 in all of the Pines last year. But it will fill up quickly on boxing day until people head back to work in the new year.

Araps is fine during summer. If you get some really oppressive 40deg days, it can be a bit miserable if it stays hot for a few days in a row, but there's enough shady gullies and rock with differnt aspects that there's generally something that is nice to climb.
My general rule for hot days at Araps is up early, climb early before it heats up. Back to the tent for lunch and a couple of beers, a cheeky arvo siesta when its really hot, and then another 3-4 hours of climbing in the evening before it gets dark.

The Pines is usually buzzing, often culminating in a party on new years eve. Great atmosphere. Just be aware that it can be very hot over december / jan so expect to climb in the mornings when its cool and arvo / evening when the sun goes behind the mount, the rest of the day is best spent in a shady hammock or fire dam.
