Expansion at first roof ready to fall out due to sideways forces spinning it. Replaced with glue in. Permadraws (used due to extreme traversing) inspected and swapped out as necessary with new ones. 5 steel Djinn biners used to prolong life. FA funded permadraws as these are not SCQ-reimbursable items. A point of note that someone had recently replaced a bolt under first roof with a large trubolt. Unused holes here patched as part of this work.

Flinders.
When the list of corrective actions were reviewed, it was clear many of the safety-related issues
came from permadraws (including issues with nylon dogbones and non-stainless steel
components). To ensure clarity and ensure this is "on the record" for future claims, it’s the position
of SCQ that we will not be supplying financial assistance with regards to permadraws. There are a
few reasons for this:
<li>SCQ’s mission is to ensure climbs remain <i>as safe</i> as they were on the first ascent. None
of
the climbs had permadraws on the first ascent, these were subsequently added. If a first
ascentionist wants their route to have permadraws, they can fund these themselves.
<li>If SCQ funded permadraws, it is easy to envisage a situation where first ascentionists choose
poor quality (cheap) gear in the knowledge that SCQ will eventually come along and fund better
quality equipment. This is not SCQ’s aim.
<li>Permadraws themselves are devisive within the climbing community, for numerous reasons.
For
example, in several areas they have been known to cause access issues. Land managers typically
do not like them. SCQ is committed to ensuring access, not contributing to issues that may
threaten access.
Hopefully the above clarifies the position of SCQ in regards to permadraws are explains why, in
this instance, this work was funded.

"Classic old school bolting with three different methods employed (whatever they could get their hands on). Three very dodgy bolts out of 6. One in very hollow rock, 2 were bash in friction fit bolts (hand drilled hole with a standard bolt hammered in) - these only grab at end of hole. Twisted out easily with a spanner. <font color=red>To do: Grind off a poorly placed old expansion as it was stubborn and hole was shallow</font>."

Description: Stainless flush heads and hangers
This monster extension of Cleared for Takeoff was originally bolted with a selection of stainless trubolts and stainless flusheads, using fixed hangers of a couple of different brands. A bad batch of steel was used by one of the fixed hanger manufacturers. The result was a selection of prematurely rusted fixed hangers on this route (see example below). All offending hangers were removed and replaced. The other item noted was that where trubolts were used, these were also prematurely rusted, indicating these were of lower quality stainless steel than the flushheads we typically use.

The result was prematurely rusted fixed hangers on this route, and an instance of stress corrosion cracking on one of the hangers (as a point of interest, this hanger, made of 400 grade stainless steel had a fixed mild-steel leaver biner on it for 18+ months). We removed all hardware and upgraded this route to stainless glue-in ringbolts over 3 days of work (!)

<b>Update 4/9/11:</b> After some surface discolouration of glue noted, third bolt was tested to AS1891: 7.5kN in tension for 2 minutes using calibrated Hilti industrial test rig. Passed.
<b>Update 24/3/13:</b> Chemical reaction on surface of glue - very strange. Third bolt was again tested to AS1891: 7.5kN in tension for 2 minutes using calibrated Hilti industrial test rig. Passed. Will continue to test at ~12 month intervals.

<font color=red>Coolum has proven to be the most corrosive cliff in Queensland. SCQ recommends the use of epoxy based glue such as Ramset 801 or Hilti RE-500 for this work and not polyester based glue like Ramset 101 due to the low porosity of the rock. 101 was found to not work at Tibrogargan (similar rock).</font> <font color=blue>After some surface reaction issues were noticed in 2010-11, we also recommend discontinuing the use of Powers PowerFast PRO. Update: the manufacturer has discontinued the product now.</font><font color=red>
• Cleared For Takeoff: In dire need of a full rebolt with glue-in U-bolts and original FH's and dogging bolts removed and patched.
• Chevy Motor: Extreme anti-corrosion anchor to be devised and installed.</font>

Received 10mm U-bolts N&G, the lower two bolts are approx 200/250 mm legs and the higher two are approx 160/220 mm legs. Removal of the old rings was not easy, however the first bolt only took a light sideways tap to break the glue bond,due to the fact that these rings were not recessed. The position of the first and second bolt has changed, both have been moved about a foot to the left the second is maybe 3-4 inches lower. Hopefully not too many people disapprove of this, about half a dozen people helped decide on the final position of these two. The fall is definitely directed into the scoop now, the first bolt still has multiple options for the hard man or woman to ground up ascend and it is a lot more possible to clip the second from a lower hold. <font color=red>The sand used on the glue wasn't a very good match in colour this also will see some attention next visit. </font>

It has come to light that Tru-bolt style expansion bolts can have issues with spinning hangers. In extreme cases the nuts can come completely loose and the hangers will fall off. Troposphere, Aphelion and Heliosphere have all had work done on them to upgrade the security of the fixed pro. All threads were centre-punched to ensure that nuts could not spin off. The missing hanger on Aphelion was also replaced.

The original anchor placed by LS was 2x 6 inch 12mm stainless carrot bolts with chain links. The bolts were spun into Ramset capsules, and set before they could achieve optimal depth. When they were removed by GL, the glue inside was found to be tacky. This probably means that only a portion of the glue was mixed properly. Beware of capsules!
22/8/04: One of the original glue-in anchor bolts was protruding a fair way. Another was added by MH (45 deg PFH hanger with mallion).

The rap station above cave 2 was removed by concerned climbers, and replaced. The problems with the original double ringbolt station are as follows:
1) Bolts cut off shorter. Presumably to save hand-drilling effort!
2) No angle was re cut on the end. They were just cut square.
3) Too low. The rope rubbed on the rock in four places as it went through the bolts... It still pulled ok but if it was placed 300 or 500 higher the rope wouldn't rub on anything.
4) Not recessed at all!!!
5) Glued in with Araldite.
This now fixed.

Pitch 1 belay: Extremely antique piton and valve-stem (!) anchor (see picture) replaced with double stainless tru-bolt belay with fixed hangers.
Pitch 2 belay: This was a piton and tree belay. The piton had rusted out and the tree was burned off the cliff by fire. Replaced with double stainless tru-bolt belay with fixed hangers.
Phil adds "There are some ancient fixed pitons on that route that should be left in place as route markers. There is definitely very adequate natural placements nearby that can be used in lieu of clipping these historical relics. Please do not remove."

The original route was bolted in Jan 1998 with standard Ramset stainless 12mm dynabolts which do not leave much thread to work with when you try to do them up. This led to the crux hanger falling off as someone climbed past it (eek!). The top anchor was also too low on the ledge (bad drag), so a double ring anchor was placed higher. Unfortunately, one ring did not cure and was removed the same day. <font color=red>That hole should be patched and another ring installed.</font>
