Is that preplaced rusted mank being used for protection?

@bc comment on f_abe comment.
'I have no doubt that you're being the classic internet keyboard warrior in that you're jealous that mikl climbs harder than you do. Are you really that insecure that you look at him climbing in the middle of winter, and have to say that he has too many clothes on even though he clearly forgot to pack his red hawaian floral t-shirt.'

Fixtitforya?...

... and yes, bright clothing would've added to the pic.

Typically interesting Sydney seacliff sandstone with features that probably lend themself to photography better than climbing!

The light over-exposure top left would have been hard to avoid and still get detail in the shadowed areas...
Good climbing action, but I suspect there is a runner hidden at mikls waist.

It would have been a better photo (for me) if the belayer featured in it.

Maybe Peter invented a new sandbag while belaying, by tieing off the belay middle of a crux move, to step back and photograph the angst?

Absolutely a runner at my waist. Wouldn't leave the ledge without it.

@mikl "Absolutely a runner at my waist. Wouldn't leave the ledge without it."

Why not? The crack to your left would take natural pro easily.
... And I dare say that the crack you are on would take enough pro (though spaced), to be sane also.
Heh, heh, heh.

Originally all this real estate was covered in a wandery trad 17. It climbed from bottom left to far right to get to the first ledge. then traversed just below where I am to the grey rock then up the shattered cracks above.

With no repeats since 1978 the area was modernised, particularly after the old trad route further right had one runner in 10m, and
a VW-sized block came off with hand pressure.
There are now 3 straight up sport routes on the wall at 18, 22, 22 with many repeats in the last 14 months.

Fair enough. Thanks for the modernisations, as every climber should experience the Sydney sea cliffs at least once in their climbing career.
(... and take a camera to record it!)

If I ever get back to the Sydney cliffs the wandery trad 17 is probably the magnet that would attract me at Rosa Gully (amongst other locations), as late '70's was around the time that other early routes were put up on the northern beach headlands, Barrenjoey, etc, that I remember with affection.

There is a classic 16 trad opposite it (Tourist Route, originally 13, then an editing error by Rock mag made it 23 in the old guide), with perfect rock and gear, no ledges to hit and no loose cracks full of death blocks

Just checked the Rock insert guides and you are right, it went from 13 in 1987 edition, to 23 in 1991 edition.
I put the discrepancy down to typical sandbagging at the time, which was later corrected!
"What's the lowest grade we can give it without bursting out into laughter?"
"Oh, 13? (Insert sounds of muffled chortling here)"

Another typical climbing bum shot.
Edweirdo will be pleased.

If it had more kelp and other flotsam and jetsam floating about on the rock platform that's been cut off in base of the pic, to remind stuey of his screen saver, then he too would be pleased.

If the climber or photog involved were to offer a stipend to simey (which would topup his depleted one), for a rave review of this Chockstone photo presentation, then he'd be pleased too.

I love that the rock in the foreground (bottom right hand) looks like a creature from the Dark Crystal!

I don't really understand what the purpose of the Chockstone Photo Gallery is or why some of the shots are selected.
It's hardly a platform for exhibiting great photography.

This one is a poor photograph of what I am sure is an interesting climb.
No disrespect intended. I am as guilty as anyone of taking badly exposed photographs and posting them on the web, and I sell my good shots (of surf). This looks like it was snapped on a pocket digital or mobile phone.
If it's just a personal record or is of historical merit then that's fine.

Can someone tell me what the gallery is for without getting shitty with me or reacting badly to my criticism of this one?

@ KB "I don't really understand what the purpose of the Chockstone Photo Gallery is or why some of the shots are selected". (snip) & "Can someone tell me what the gallery is for" (snip)

G’day K B,

Having been around Chocky since its inception I guess I can somewhat answer your query, as I have noticed that the photo section has evolved over time.

Initially as a fledgling site, it was a showcase to exhibit our local ‘Australian Climbing’ based on the enthusiasm and stoke of Chockstone Members. Without looking for original posts on the matter I think it was suggested as an improvement to Chockstone, was discussed on forum and readily endorsed, because it gave members another opportunity to develop the sense of community that we are, by sharing our experiences.

I suspect that Site Author (Mike), always had a vision for Chockstone that included a focus on quality and this extended to ‘Picture of the week’ (as it was at that time), because he had the luxury of being able to pick and choose from contributions back then so the published results reflected that quality. I know for sure that there were contributions made that never got ‘published’ due to not being of high enough standard.
The current wording in the quote below is different to what it used to be because (I’m pretty sure), it used to include words to effect of submit ‘if you have an outstanding or exceptional pic’
Every so often Chockstone selects a recent picture taken by our members to be awarded the illustrious distinction of appearing in the "Photo Gallery". All photos are most welcome. Email Chockstone or leave feedback on the forum to send in contributions or to nominate a picture.

Elsewhere on Chockstone...

Chockstone is a sponsored, but non-profit, non-commercial website. It provides content primarily relevant to rock climbers in Victoria, Australia. No claim is made about the accuracy or suitability of any information, see the full disclaimer.

Users are encouraged to contribute to this site's crag guide, photo & video gallery, tech tips, interviews, gear, book and movie reviews, dictionary, links list and the popular forum. Simply email material to Chockstone or post to the forum. The forum has become the central focus of this site with hundreds of climbers, most of them locals, logging on each week to discuss all things climbing.

Back then if one clicked on ‘Gallery’ it took you to the section where you are now reading this, along with a link to submitting a photo, and that link listed the preferred format and quality of such submissions. In more recent times the Gallery has been revised and is now a link into Mike’s Chockstone Photography...

I guess we get what we pay for and since sourcing quality material for Photo Gallery on a continuous basis proved difficult due dwindling submissions Chocktone went through a period of the photo being presented hardly ever changing, and now including photos of a technically lesser standard.

Cheers,
Idra~>M9

Thanks for that detailed explanation M9. It surprises me that there aren't more people out there snapping away, who might want to submit their better shots for the minimal glory of Chockstone exposure.
Second thoughts, no it doesn't.

Sometimes I wonder if there are any outdoor climbers active in my state at least.
I barely ever see anyone on the rare occasions that I can afford enough fuel to get far enough to find solid rock.

If however the standard accepted is not particularly high, why does it take so long to switch images. Whose job is that? Surely it can't take much effort.
That ordinary shot of Mari seemed to be up for weeks. There must be a back log of other average shots that could be uploaded and have it changed at least every couple of weeks. Otherwise things just look stagnant. Chockstone then remains solely a medium for the usual protagonists to trade the same old schoolboy insults and for a few disheartened or lame ex climbers to offload their dusty unloved gear.

I don't think this website is currently doing a heck of a lot to promote, encourage or excite when it comes to climbing in Victoria particularly. If that was originally part of it's intention it needs reinvigorating, in my opinion.
Good photos might help a bit.
Cheers, Karl

@ "why does it take so long to switch images. Whose job is that?"

It is normally Site Author, however he has a life outside of Chockstone (unlike some of us, heh, heh, heh), and isn't always available; even if he had the resources?
As far as I have gathered, he (Mike) is still the main person who does it, though there is a strong possibility that nmonteith (a Site Moderator), has helped out with it from time to time?? No doubt nm will correct my guesswork if he reads this and I am wrong...

If you want better photos more often the simple solution is take some and send them to me.

At present I get one every month or two and I post almost all of them except if they are truly uninteresting or not related to Australian climbing.

I haven't climbed anything or read the forum in many years, and my time is very limited, but I'm happy to post new photos as they come in and appreciate the effort it takes to capture a good image.

I can only imagine the one I sent was "truly uninteresting" then as it was certainly Australian.
