A bit too much grey rock, clothing and helmet for my liking.

I have no doubt that you're being the classic internet keyboard warrior in that you're jealous that a woman climbs harder than you do. Are you really that insecure that you look at a female, climbing in the middle of winter, and have to say that she has too many clothes on when the belayer is wearing a puffy jacket??
I know, you're a sport climber.

Unfortunately your attitude is the same with many males in the sport, which then discourages females from wanting to climb.

You should apologise.

Also, why haven't the moderators deleted the above comment like they are so quick to do with all other offensive comment?

Good work Philly.

Calm down dear, I didn't think it was a great photo for the reasons outlined which was a comment on the colour rather than quantity of clothing as you had wrongly assumed.
Maybe you should apologise for jumping down people's throats and making assumptions about them.

Nice back pedal. Perhaps improve your sentence construction and you
won't sound like a douche.

The picture is grey because the rock is grey.
The sky was grey.
She had a grey top on.
The helmet is also grey.

Stop being greycist.

I like the angle of the shot, and the composition is strong.

I can see how the first post could very well be interpreted as done.
I knew what you meant, but that's because I'm used to looking at the posts in these threads and evaluating photos from a photographic standpoint where it is hard to escape the fact that contrasting and bright coloured clothes do often make for a better shot in the outdoors.

I do think it would have improved this shot because the belayers colourful clothes draw the eye there.

Very defensive response though.

Looking pretty smug at 'the rest that offers no rest'.

There are climbs and then there are climbs....

Seems like BIG chris has got a big chip on his shoulder..... With an attitude like that you'll get eaten alive on this forum! Lol

Love the eyes!
~> They really make the photo for me due being such a good human interest
element of it.

I certainly also agree with the comments about it being a (very, imo) strong
composition photo, and also about the lead climbers clothing colour tending to blend
with the rock colour; ... a positive and a negative which tends to balance out...

I also like the fact that you can see the belayer, and sufficient depth of field to tell a
story of the ascent to this point.

I would have given another star if the photo depicted the lead climber in a more
action oriented position, ie with gear in hand & about to place it where her eyes lead the viewer; but as the way it is
shown for us here, it comes across as a little too posed for my liking.

Re "the rest that offers no rest" comment; I notice that Philly may be milking a sneaky
knee-bar to achieve that...

Did I mention that I love the eyes?
~> They drew my attention first; that and the fact that her smile indicates she is obviously enjoying her lead and location.

It is also great to see a woman grace Chockstone Photo Gallery prime spot too.

Thanks for sharing the photo.

For me, a good picture makes me want to go and climb the route. This pic
does that for me.

I read an article by a climbing photographer (can't remember who) in which he said
he always throws a red TShirt in with his kit, for when his subjects have a neutral
coloured shirt on. The red (or green or blue) shirt helps to make the climber stand
out and makes for a stronger photo.

That's what maxdacat was getting at before he was accused of just about
everything under the sun.

I agree with maxdacat.

Mate, unhinch your carkle and relax a bit or change your call name to
overlydefencivechris.

I quite like the photo but I'm giving it half a star because it was submitted by a big
sook.

Actually, I went back and read the first two comments again and I cant believe
maxdacat's comment elicited such a response from the original poster.

I know which direction I think an apology should come from.

Booyah Philly. I like the pic because I like you:) You have to be stoked with that lead...

P.S. I only learned your surname thanks to this post:)

Ha ha, that exchange was hilarious. A simple semicolon would have avoided the
whole mess."A bit too much grey: rock, clothing and helmet for my liking." To avoid
future epic internet battlz, try reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance
Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss; excerpt below.

“A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and
fires two shots in the air.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda
produces a badly punctuated wildlife annual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and
leaves.”

The photo is pretty good.

It's great to see a woman on a classic crack like Mari. My other main thought on the
photo though is: WTF is anyone doing on Mari in the middle of winter?????

@Wendy - It wasn't that cold that particular day. If you put your jacket on in
between climbs it's all good - We had a play on Electric Warrior and Devoid
while we were up there which were pretty tough but super fun.

@ widewetnslipoff’s comment of “Nice rack”
I have no doubt that you’re being the classic internet keyboard has-been warrior in that you are jealous of a woman with a bigger rack than yours.
Are you really that insecure that you look at a female and have to say she has a nice rack when you probably haven’t had a fondle of your rack in the last ice age?

I know, you’re a boulderer.

Unfortunately your attitude is the same with many males in the sport, which then discourages females from wanting to climb.

You should apologise.

Also, why haven't the moderators deleted the above comment like they are so quick to do with all other offensive comment?

Good work Philly. You can be my boss anytime this winter that you like.

And what’s with the “Booyah” rubbish M62.5?
Philly is boss for doing the route in winter, colothed or not!

It is a decent photo even if subbed by a overly-defencive-sook photog.

It's pitiful but not only is it a colon but it's in the wrong spot to make the joke he attempted to make.

Nice work Chris.
Philly looking good. Sparkle in the eyes and cheeky grin.

After reading the comments on this site for a long time I feel vindicated in NOT
posting photos of my daughter climbing.

Can only hear "nice rack", "like to grab that jug", "crack - et al", without wanting to
smash in the face of the purile turd delivering the line. I hear in Bigchris the same
frustration I often have.

Sentence structure aside.
A real photo. As it was. Documentary not contrived. Tired of photos with red shirts,
bandanas, chalk up to the elbows, Buddist monk like concentration look on the face.
Let's go ask alex to change his shirt half way up the nose while he free solos. Really.
I love his check shirts. Why? Because it looks like the one picked up off the floor that
was least whiffy.

@chris: Wendys come with strict condition requirements. Mari never sees the
sun, hence it could never see a Wendy in the winter! The thing I don't
understand about doing these routes in winter is they are so good to do in
summer, although you have to do Mari early in the day when belaying in the
sun is still tolerable.

Devoid is actually very good for a mossy looking rarely
climbed thing, isn't it? You guys should jump on Hyeana, Hard Ears, Electra,
Claw, Sideshow, Great White Hope, Good, Bad and Ugly etc - fun in the sun
cracks.
In the meanwhile, I am at Frog needing thermals and a jacket whilst a
bunch of Tasmanians run around shirtless. We are heading for Townsville
where hopefully even I won't be needing my down jacket.

@releuctant I think it is a good reason to post lots of photos of your daughters
climbing. Real photos showing grot, sweat, terror, exaltation and all those
things that really come with climbing rather than the sort of beautified images we
often get of female sportspeople.

If anything inappropriate is said, stand up against it. (i completely missed the
offensive deleted comment here, and I guessed it was a grammar issue in comment
number one that the problem was the amount of grey, not the amount of clothing).
The world doesn't change unless we make it.

Good photo, and well led Philly.

I thought widewetandslippery's comment was harmless fun. Some of us get that kind of remark fairly often and I think it should be taken as a compliment rather than as an excuse to go all teary, angry, or high-horsey.

looks like a great route; and like pat, this photo makes me want to go and climb it.
good to see women climbing and a pic of a route that is achievble for many instead of just the elite.

Not every climbing day is a deliberate photo shoot... sometimes folks go out for a
climb without the intent of taking any photos, and thus simply head out wearing what is
comfortable and/or suitable for the climb. If a photo happens to get taken, it gets
taken. You tend to get more honest pics that way, people enjoying the day out on the
rock :)
