Hooray, a pic from Vic at last!

Good photo that tells a story about the effort involved in face-climbing a crack!
I'd have given another half a star if the closest runner was out of frame, i.e. being a greater runout than that pictured...
... though it's great to not see any bolts(!), heh, heh, heh.

Great composition. I like the proportional balance in the photo (⅓ - ⅔ strong visual anchors), between subject climber on rock, and background, and there is just enough sky/horizon to add further dimension/balance in that respect for my taste...
The roofline below climbers left foot draws the eye, as do the aretes.

I also like it that the subject climber is close enough to see a bit of facial expression, clearly stands out from the rock due the bright shirt, and that the picture-depth-perspective is added too by his close proximity yet is still roughly proportional i.e. a quarter of the view as a whole, and this enhanced with the climber looming large in the foreground.

Nice enough shot.

M9 - how come you haven't mentioned the belayer? your standards are slipping!!!

@ Big G "M9 - how come you haven't mentioned the belayer? your standards are slipping!!!"

I thought about that before posting my comment, and decided that not seeing a belayer was better than seeing a belayer cut in half!
... ~> so I ignored it due out of sight is good enough to be out of comment, heh, heh, heh.
;-)

The depth perspective would have been enhanced with a belayer visible, but I think detrimentally at the cost of distance-perspective and character-intrigue that is evident in this photograph.
It would have been hard to achieve without using a wider angle lense, and still retain the strong points this photograph has, but if sucessfully done would have got another star in my rating for it.

Catching the sun inbetween the showers. That was a good winters day out.

Thanks for the tips on the shot. It was taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 compact. It has a LEICA wide angle lens that has a remarkably low level of distortion for a compact. Relatively cheap camera in the scheme of things ($300 second hand) and very easy to carry when climbing.

M9 sees a rack and dishes out the stars. Are you serious?

You cant even see the route, belayer, exposure or landscape. I'm sorry but this is completely uninspiring to me.

Serious yes, but not due seeing a rack.
This photo is technically better than the previous Bulahdelah one, which I assume prompts your comment above.

I make my star allocation on photographic technical considerations first and foremostly, and as a climber/emotion-response a long-distant secondarily.
If you doubt this, then take the time to review my comments on all the previous photos that have been presented in Photo Gallery.

I agree that you can't see the route or belayer, and this is why it didn't warrant more stars from me.

When I just reviewed a sample of my previous comments, it would appear that I am generally a 'harsh marker' when it comes to handing out stars, though some of my higher star allocations were for bolted routes.

My comments about bolts are mostly tongue in cheek, however it seems that this may have trolled you?
If so then if I recall correctly; someone that used to have a white rabbit as an avatar once wrote on Chockstone; "It is the internet after all".
Heh, heh, heh.

I like it, cos it makes me want and go and do the route, even though it has nothing on stugang's route at The Hole.
I doubt the jamming on this route is as good as the jamming at the Lion Hotel at Arkaba, ay stuie?

i think more people relate to the climbing in this one than the hard sport routes that apear here.
looks like it was a fun day out and climber is more smiling than grimacing.

I'm with Kent, it doesn't show the route at all,how is one to get inspired by that?
I know the route, and it is a great looking line and he's actually just pulled the
overhang near the top but you have no idea of that from the photo. Still there
should probably be some credit given for catch the approximately 3 minutes of
tshirt weather in Victarcitica this winter.

Most people who might view this photo probably have no such intimate knowledge of the route and only judge it by what they see in the pic.

You also get inspired by such great looking lines as offwidths, and most climbers avoid them when they find them, but may like seeing someone else mastering one in a photo should one ever get published here?

Five star photo, simply for dragging a couple of seldom commenters who are heavily into bolts and offwidths to the comments bbq.

I'm inspired by this lovely winter roasting weather Victarctica is having. How about you sis?

Judging the climb by what I see in the photo - um I see nothing of it! I have
no idea what size crack, what sort of terrain it passes through, how long it is
... Plus there's something about seeing a climber's hands in photos. Which
is a little more challenging when they are buried in a crack, but some sense
of the relative desperation of holding on is good.

There have been some nice enough days in Victarctica since I got back, but
mostly, they seem to be when I'm working so I just get to stare wistfully out
the window at them.

I just noticed M9 is complaining that the last runner is too close and ruins
the picture by not having a runout.WTF? It's at his feet! That's a terrifying
runout!

By your admissions above, and much as I hate to admit it, I think M9 is right in this case; and so I rest my case.

Sorry M9, but by virtue of this being a climbing forum - that has to take precedence
over the quality of the photography... In this case he could be bouldering in his
backyard by the amount of visible "climbing" in frame.
The landscape looks beautiful, lovely cliff line - crop out the angry guy and you have
a nice nature photo.
As a climbing photo? Not Much to look at...

@ martym
Are you for real?
A boulderer in their backyard only has a view of their own illegitimate project, so how can you compare that to a real ascent?
M9 might be an aider as far as climbing goes, but from what I have seen of his photo comments, he does appear to know chalk from cheese when the technicalities of photography are concerned, unlike you it seems.
Another half star to counteract your comment.

Even KP is over-rating it, about the only thing it prompted for me was a
mental contrast of how Dave racks his gear vs yours truly.
