How do a find a Chocky page's link address?

For example, if I want to send a link to someone to a Chocky page. All I can see in the address bar is http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp. Somewhere there is a message id address, but damned if I can find it for any given page. I'm sure its easy - can someone help?

thanks

Alex

It is a bit convoluted in my opinion, though others such as ajfclark may know a better system.

If you want to link to a particular post, then click on the view thread/messages icon at base of page.
Find the particular post that you are interested in quoting, and click on it, (found by author and date/time).
This should bring up the particular post that you are interested in, and in the address line at top of page it will be listed, where you can copy it.

When it comes to a page instead of an individual post, then the ID line (as found in the addy bar), ends in "&Sort=#NewPost'.
If you delete this portion (new post) off the addy line then you should end up with the page.
ie end the copy and paste before the .... &Sort=#NewPost
eg
http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=DisplayTopic&ForumID=9&MessageID=2381&Replies=2&PagePos=0

Clear as mud?

I usually use the search function. Go top the front page of the forum, search for the thread title, the link should be the full address. If you change pages, it becomes the vanilla forums link again.

So in this instance, I search for chocky page address and get http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=Display&ForumID=9&MessageID=2381&Replies=1

My address bar seems to show the entire address for a given page. For instance, for Page 3 of the Shooting in National Parks thread it displays ...

http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=DisplayTopic&ForumID=1&MessageID=111396&PagePos=&Sort=&Replies=140&MsgPagePos=40

I'm using Safari Version 6.0.2

What happens when you change pages?

All the buttons are set to the post method of pulling a page and hide the details. All the links use the get method.

The side effect of this is once you post in a thread or navigate through it using the buttons, the variables disappear from the address bar. This makes it hard to give someone a link to a particular page in a thread (unless you start manually modifying the MsgPagePos variable in the URL).

We could probably ask Mike to change the buttons to use the get method but he might've been using post for a reason. Actually given that half the site uses get already I'm not sure why the buttons don't too.

I still see the full address, i.e.

http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=DisplayTopic&ForumID=1&MessageID=111396&PagePos=&Sort=&Replies=140&MsgPagePos=80

or

http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=DisplayTopic&ForumID=1&MessageID=111396&PagePos=&Sort=&Replies=140&MsgPagePos=120

Even if I move to a different thread the full page address is still displayed . . .

http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=DisplayTopic&ForumID=1&MessageID=106951&PagePos=&Sort=&Replies=56&MsgPagePos=20

Whacky. Safari shouldn't do that unless he's pushing out different code for it to other browsers (which I doubt he is).

Whacky it may be, but perhaps Safari is intuitively understanding my preferences and delivering accordingly. ;-)

Certainly I see an advantage in being able to direct someone to a specific page (for instance to read a single post) rather than requiring them to trawl through a mega-page thread.

Is there a problem with this detailed page address information being visible/available to users?

Generally post method is considered slightly more secure because the bar for forging such requests is trivially higher. You have to hunt for the variable names, submit the post request, etc. It also has advantages when passing large amounts of data as the fields gets passed in separately rather than all getting tracked onto the URL. There is a limit to how long a URL will be accepted by the webserver.

When you post a reply, does the location URL still have all the page and message details?

I'm not sure I properly understand the question but I'll post this reply then check if I can see all the address details.

(Edit) After posting the reply I can see the following address:

http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=DisplayTopic&ForumID=9&MessageID=2381&Replies=10#NewPost

I mean on the page directly after you click ok to post a reply.

I'd also be interested what the address back says when you click on the view message button to the left of this post.

When I click the VIEW button the address bar shows:

http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp

and again the same address after pressing OK.

Ah, that makes way more sense! I get it now; Are you using the links to change pages Rather than the buttons?

That's far easier than searching or carrying on to get the details, but won't work for single page threads. For those you'd still need to copy the address before you submit a post or anything.

I've been using the "Message" links as in:

Messages 1 to 20 | 21 to 40 | 41 to 60 | 61 to 80 | 81 to 100 | 101 to 120 | 121 to 140 | 141 to 14

Not the I< and << buttons if that's what you mean?

Thanks all. Actually, using Chrome at home, I get the full address, it was only from work using IE9 that I didn't. M9, I'll use your method in that case.

Thanks

Yes. The links will leave the address in the location bar, any buttons won't. So once you reply to a thread, the location becomes the useless link and you need to navigate back to thread thread using a link somehow before you get the useful location again.

I would imagine that's why it appears to have worked in chrome for them, they came back into the thread they wanted to send and the location was complete.

Might ask Mike if he can make some of the buttons use the get method so this issue disappears.

If he obliges, then please update this thread with feedback.
