Should hijacked usernames be allowed on Chocky?

Should we allow a user to create a name that simply duplicates an already well known users name but adds a single letter (or symbol) difference? For example "ratherbeclimbinV9." as apposed to "ratherbeclimbinV9"

I'm not a fan of modifying existing names slightly (adding a full stop etc) or even hijacking usernames...

EDIT: If the modification is for malicious purposes I'm not stoked. If it's for a bit of fun I'm ok with it... Ambiguous I know...

What do you expect to be an outcome?

What about when two registered users swap their ID's, as has happened more than once; ... sometimes deliberate, sometimes hijacked while they were impersonating?

What about when user ID's are similar(?), eg the example you used vs mine, ... (though I view it as a pseudoform of flattery resulting from a slight lack of imagination on part of the imitator).

What about multiple user ID's of some posters?

Do you think things will be more civil and greater respect abound if everyone was clearly identified?
~> Good luck with that, as I already note plenty of stirrers who post regularly that wouldn't worry about it, based on their post history to date!

It is all a game, and keeping up with the evolution of it I find interesting from time to time.

hard to police...
how many "daves" "davids" davos" are there?

Does it make a real difference?
What I find confusing is when people change their names - you never know who said what...

Maybe the Mods could create a sticky thread with latest updates of who has become who, who has deleted their posts, etc?

I think it likely to be more work than they would want, and I tend to respect the fact that some people try to limit their digital footprint from identifying them, for a whole range of reasons apart from simple stirring on a website where their true identity is known by many anyway.

Like you've done in your profile :)

I have no objection to anonymity - but at least consistent anonymity - you can always create a NEW user if you want to detach yourself from your previous "Avatar"...
the idea of Banning a user is always funny - you can't (as far as I'm aware) ban an IP address

True.
Additionally I note that one's current ID overwrites all one's previous posts on their account with the new ID, so to that extent there is consistency.

I wouldn't know, but the 'real' Eduardo Slabofvic has posted more than once about IP address masking software.

It is interesting that the poll attached to that thread had more options, and that the result was that 50% more votes were recorded in the (effectively) 'who cares?' bracket, than the outright 'no' camp.

Wow - i wasn't expecting such a one sided result! (I don't include a "whatever" option as doing nothing and keeping the status quo is the same as a vote yes)

I was more worried about the extreme end of the wedge - where users are deliberately matching someone elses username so they can trick the casual reader into thinking they are that person. It's been happening a bit recently - and can be very confusing.

Confusing? Yes, potentially; however there are also some interesting insights on that other thread from some of the perpetrators of this practise.
Amongst themselves (ie the minor contingent who it seems to matter to), they have their fun, and things eventually stabilise again.

*shrugs* I think there is a difference, and am in the "whatever" camp myself.

Bet you didn't know that all the votes were from hijacked user names.

Mike is never going to have the time to code these changes so I think we need to charge M9 with creating a thread and keeping it up to date with the changed usernames :)

Alternatively, the mods could just ban for good stugang, davidn, muki, pastor gerry narowikiz and one day hero (I know ODH doesn't change his username, but if you're banning that lot he may as well be banned as well).

Actually not one vote yet...

But all of those usernames are me? and you forgot about the others....

Given the amount of duplicate threads that happen, along with repeats of (what have now become) standard questions asked on Chockstone; I seriously doubt that people will take the time to search/cross reference reading a second thread to try and make sense of a first thread User-ID-anomaly.

Along with the point I made above, I think the most practical alternative is to simply take it for what it is, ie light hearted fun amongst a few recidivists, and enjoy the fun (if it appeals), or ignore* it if it doesn't make sense.
(*Easy to do with the 'ignore function' available when the user profile is clicked on).

I have managed to turn the confusion into a Chocky positive (for me), and have my own fun in trying to decipher the changes and keep up with them (for the most part); but I acknowledge that this approach is considered bent by most Chocky readers, especially if they don't have time to do it.

If ever the content of an imposter post/s becomes an aggravation to the original ID, then fair enough, bin the imposter, and delete the offending post/s, but so far I have not read anything posted from those directly affected voicing concern about it.

So far, 252 people logged in today and 29 voted. Even with time lag adjustment of numbers, this says to me that most Chocky readership couldn't care less about the issue!
