I know on the pack it says minimum 8.9mm. But curious of any first hand experience of using something skinnier like 8.5mm.

Also the grigri+ allegedly goes to 8.5mm. So any first hand experience with that also appreciated.

Ok fk the 8.5 on a grigri 2 unless you have a death wish.

What about the grigri+? Anyone tried it on an 8.5 for self belay?

Don't know about the Gri Gri + but Stugang is right about the Gri Gri 2. I imagine it's the same situation. If you use anything too thin it still takes some weight off but will slide through, especially depending on how slick the rope is. Just use a stitch plate.

Have rapped on 8mm static many times with many different static ropes on gri gri 2. Also used 8mm double braid dyneema core with poly sheath in a 4 to 1 pulley system with very slow issues of slippage up to about 6KN so a about 1.5KN of force

Using a standard GriGri with an 8.9 seems ok to me, ymmv...
My mega original worn out one slips slowly under body weight but not to bad ...
Mini-traxion on 8.9 seems fine for TR solo ..

Cheers all. Im specifically after something for self belay on 8.5mm. In any case I ’ve borrowed a grigri + from a mate and done a few tests at home and it seems ok on the 8.5mm. As I’m planning on using for self belay i want it to bite not slip. Like I said the lounge room test it seemed ok. I’ll test it out at the he crag soonish and will let y’all know how it goes.

Allegedly Petzl are bringing out a normal gri gri that goes to 8.5mm this year.
