Does anyone know the best way to recycle Jetboil fuel canisters?
There used to be a tool which could be used to puncture the fuel canister, allowing it to be disposed of in the normal recycling. However, neither Bogong or Paddy Palin sell this anymore - not sure why. They have suggested that I take it the spent canister to a "transfer station" whatever that is.
Does anyone know of a better/easier way to recycle these things? It seems like a real waste to just chuck it out and I'm surprised none of the outdoor stores provide a free drop off recycling service (that I know of).

I'm not sure if I've tried this with Jetboil canisters, as I usually use the longer, thinner, butane canisters, but my recycling solution is to ensure the canister is fully depleted (by attaching a stove and leaving it lit until the flame goes out), and then use heavy pliers to peel the collar upwards (i.e. the ring about 3cm diameter around the screw thread) and then rip the entire screw valve section out of the canister, leaving a big hole. I usually then stand the canister upright and light it on fire to burn out the remainder of the gas (which will burn slowly and in control as long as you don't tip the canister over), since butane and propane are a lot more environmentally harmful than CO2.
And a "transfer station" is a tip, for rubbish dumping and recycling, but I'd expect they would just go to landfill if you took them there.

Empty aerosols & gas cannisters can go in your recycling bin http://recyclingnearyou.com.au/aerosols
They'll either be made of steel or aluminium, just like drink & food cans.
The content isn't particularly explosive at room temp - but can be a bit dangerous if full (both in a waste compactor or a recycling processor) as it can explode under pressure, flinging baked beans or butane gas out at workers - so make sure you empty it.
The above recommendation for emptying is good. I doubt if you were to pop a hole in it that it would do any harm - I'm sure Mikl would have tried it?

Just use a tin opener- the sort that puts a triangular hole in a juice tin so you can pour the juice out,
