Exped sleeping mats - awesome support!

Heh, heh. Support. Geddit?

Anyway, just wanted to plug Exped for their fantastic post-sale support. I'd been using one of their Downmats (a down-filled inflatable sleeping mat) for four and a half years now, and it's always been super comfortable, and extremely warm even when sleeping on snow. But, mine recently suffered a failure where one of the internal baffles released, resulting in a huge peak forming in the middle of the mat which would be at best uncomfortable to sleep on, and at worst would just roll you off the mat if you tried. Not expecting much, I checked the Exped website, just in case they'd be able to fix it, and discovered that they have a huge 5 year warranty on most of their products. So I contacted them, and after sending proof of the purchase and the failure, they immediately offered to replace it.

My replacement mat just arrived this morning. Great work, Exped!

Mine did the same thing last Saturday night. Guess I'll take it back then

Mine is over five years old and burst a few months ago (damn it!), any idea on how they fixed it?

They didn't fix it, they advised that such an internal failure could not be repaired, and they replaced it with a new one.

But if I were to try to fix one, I might do something like sewing up the failed baffle with a strong thread at a number of points along the failure. (So you are sewing a series of separate points along the baffle, like sewing on buttons but only with thread, no buttons, rather than sewing in a line along the baffle. You'd then have the baffle held down by a series of points, each of which would leak air because you've punctured the mat.) Then use a urethane adhesive like McNett AquaSeal or SeamSeal over the stitches on both sides of the mat to reinstate airtightness. By sewing in a series of points rather than in a line, the glue won't need to flex when rolling the mat, reducing the likelihood of glue failure.

+1 M9.
In the market for a new mat and tent after last weeks Araps camp. Deflation of mat lead to rather sore old bones and failure of fly zip meant sharing tent with small rodent/s. Mind you headless mice outside the tent in the morning meant the feral cats were at work during the night.

The mice are rampant at the moment. I pulled more than 50 out of the pool yesterday morning.
