I've also got a RescueMe with the size being the main attraction for me. I just leave it in my first aid kit which generally follows me on any trip.

I tested the Spot devices whilst out in the Pacific and discovered that they are limited by the footprint of the satellite service that they use (and guess when you will find out that you are outside the satellite footprint!). A much better alternative is the Delorme inReach, which uses the Iridium satellite service, which has total global coverage. The inReach also has the ability to enter and receive text, so no need to pair it with a mobile phone. http://www.alwaysinreach.com.au

I use an inReach SE and it makes a huge difference to have two-way communication especially if you're in remote areas. They are a bit bulky but the battery life is phenomenal (5 days easy).

A PLB/EPIRB is a nice and cheap alternative - you can pick them up for around $200

SPOT messengers are utterly shit. Beside the general coverage issue they are unreliable and I had a unit which just died - unfortunately that was in a rescue situation in remote India. Googling turned out I'm not the only one. Stay away from them > they might not work when needed.

I was in the Grampians. My friend was avoiding the walkout(via helicopter). The chopper dude asked if we had set off an EPIRB, we hadn't. They had no idea who had or where it was. Turns out there was a crashed plane 100km away.

Moral to the story: If you'd like to slowly die take a EPIRB. If you'd like to live, arrange your rescue any other way.

There are beacons and there are beacons mate. The older ones are pretty shit and some I think didn't have GPS units built in. The old ones worked on a different radio frequency too. EPIRBS are a totally different unit designed for boats/planes.

We've got an ACR PLB which is the newer style one. As previous posters have mentioned they're cheap, light, waterproof and tough. Pretty much a no brainer to chuck in your bag if you're doing something risky and/or remote. I got mine 'cause I used to do offshore sailing races. For this they're mandatory and anyway if you're doing bow on a yacht and the kite knocks you over the side, you'd want one in your pocket. It's pretty hard to find and fetch someone out of the water in even average conditions on a sail boat. This happened to a a guy I met who crewed on Wild Oats. He got punted over the side by one of the sheets. He told me he started his stop watch when he landed in the water and it took 25 minutes before they got him out the water. And this was in calm water in Pittwater.

Anyway, I probably wouldn't bother taking mine to Berowra, Narrabeen or some other sport crag 15 minutes from the car. On the other hand if I was going somewhere more remote in the blueys I definitely stick it in the bag.

I finally got around to asking for a PLB for Christmas. I'm going with either the ACR ResQLink or RescueMe PLB 1 because they are on the non-commercial SARSAT network with better coverage and nil annual subscription fee.

I'm after something that alerts emergency services in a situation where I can't get myself out. From my research the Spot is pretty useless for my purposes, as it can't be relied upon in an emergency and my Telstra Blue tick mobile covers the non-essential messaging function most places I go.

I found this review of the different sattelite networks interesting:

Anyway, the reason I'm posting is to ask the name of the Rescue app I recall being mentioned on one of the accident threads. Can anyone help me out?

I'm ticking yes assuming that said beacon can also shoot a wire attached to a grappling hook.
