MSR burner and chalk on aeroplanes?

anyone had any trouble with chalk recently. I'm leaving this arvo and trying to decide if i take a chalk bag for some bouldering whilst away. My folks have moved to the middle of nowhere so not sure if there will be anywhere to purchase close by.

flew adelaide - melbourne with jetstar and qantas, a few weeks ago with a chalk bag in hand luggage with no problems

Wash it really, really well then duct tape up the outside and write "WATER" on it. Then pack it separately from your stove; maybe in a stuff sack with your water filter. There is no way for them to prove it is a fuel bottle. After all, what's to stop you from using a fuel bottle for water? You also nonchalantly claim that you're buying/borrowing a fuel bottle when you get to your destination.

When I was flying back from Sydney for work I still had a very small shifter in my hand luggage. They stopped me and although it wasn't actually mine. (It was the boses) I did have a few hours to wait for my flight home. So I was problematic. The said it was a tool you could disassemble the plain. So I answered that you need alan keys for that and by the way if your not giving it back give a receipt. Not happy they simply said no tools. Which I answered about the laptop going through. That's a work tool.
Hey what about that you can do a lot more damage with a laptop than you ever could with a tiny shifter.
They were getting pretty pissed by now so I left and had a beer.

I had a guy try to take my rope off me because i could restrain everyone on the plane, when i told him i wouldn't do that he replied that no, but someone else might use it to that : / but chalk has always been fine, even when my chalkbag leaked, a lot, in my bag on the way home from Thailand.

For future reference...

Ringbolts & drillbits - not allowed as hand luggage
Carrot bolts, RPs and bolt plates - yes, allowed!

I've traveled the world with unmarked bags of chalk for more than two decades and have never been questioned.

Ropes - I can confirm they don't like them in hand luggae. In the list of things you aren't allowed it lists "items that can be used to restrain people".

I just came back from Europe with my double ropes in my hand luggage. I was planning to check them in but we were already way over, an easy way to drop 6kg off the backpack.
Traveling with a baby though, so they may have been more lenient.

Every country is different. My experience with rope problems comes from Australia and USA security.

I once had australian airport guys try to confiscate a $1500 fly fishing rod as it could be used as a weapon apparently. Got on to the plane and was promptly handed metal cutlery and a glass. There is often no rhyme not reason

With regards to the MSR bottle / burner,

QANTAS has a form somewhere on the website which details cleaning requirements. Print it, fill it out, and have it on you to show to anyone who questions you. Chances are they have never seen it and are under the misguided impression that they are not allowed under any circumstances.

Just flew into Melbourne today from LAX - MSR International in the bike box and bottle rinsed with coffee (thanks for the tip Neil) with the lid off in the pack no dramas with Qantas...
