I was told by a Katmandon't employee that the "sales" are still more expensive than other stores every day prices, especially accessories.
eg: thermos every day $70, sale $35, normal price in kitchen store $15 (minus the very expensive Kathmandu logo).
They market urban streetware, and a very ill fitting cut at that.
Wasted $$$ buying pants on "sale".
Never again.

I think that they make better clothes than Macpac atm. Their sleeping bags aren't too bad. The rest is crap IMO. Totally bogus marketing with the sale strategy, I think ACCC looked into it? Unfortunately it seems Macpac has gone down the same road. Way to completely destory an awesome brand. They should have introduced a different brand to be sold within Macpac at a cheaper price point if they wanted to target urban weekend warriors.

Have bought a few items there, in the outlet store. Take 70% off their "RRP" and you have a reasonable price. Its all standard run of the mill rebranded Chinese stuff. Poor cuts keep me away from most if not all of their clothing.

If you want quality from China, you sure can get it. Just expect to pay more. I have seen worldclass manufacturing in clothing, automotive and other industries come from China. This includes topnotch composite parts and some of the best motorbike clothing i've seen so far. The Chinese (if there is such a thing) produce everything you want in a quality range equal to Great Wall - Mercedes.

I am happy to pay a premium price and get clothes/gear that are better cut/designed/finished. ArcTeryx gear fits me (slim and tall) best so far, and my BD/Petzl gear is made in China and i love it.

What particular m/cycle clothing are you referring to?

... & for what it is worth, from what I have seen of the motorcycles they make (admittedly not many in real life), they seem to be made to a budget, not dis-similar to Kathmandu!

And next up, in our winter pounce-wear range we have Jelmer modelling a $1000 jacket from Arc'ter'yxz. Jelmer is slim and tall, so the only brand of clothes which fits him is the most expensive outdoor gear in the universe.........strange how all the tall, slim people who don't climb seem to find clothes at a sensible price.

Most of the price for arcteryx gear is almost certainly the importer price gouging. I'm in Canada at the moment and prices for arcteryx are comparable to patagonia, north face etc. A mate has been trying to get a specific Arcteryx jacket in Aus, but they won't ship direct to Aus and have banned canadian/us retailers from doing the same - the ACCC should check into this.

As for Kathmandu...some of the old stuff from 10+ years ago at least was pretty decent. I've still got a couple of their tents that are still going strong - despite being trashed and patched a dozen times over. The mountain tent was just a rip off of the wild country quasar and the construction is actually pretty good. Surely these wouldn't have changed too much unless they've really gone cheap on the manufacturing?

As for thermals and stuff...always cheap and cheerful. Who cares where they're from...

I found Arcteryx to be outrageously expensive in REI/MEC too.

It was the same when they had climbing gear, 30% off every year just after Easter. Of course if I wasn't so cheap, my first cams would have been c4s (which they didn't sell) rather than hb quadcams (which they did) - got a great pack though, that I still use

They did. It's called "Fairydown"...
(she bought that and is doing the same again)

Jeez mate, I don't think you should diss your former sponsor like that! Didn't you come close to the second or third aussie ascent of Fitz Roy whilst decked out in qwality gear by Kathmandu?
