Gear lost/taken near Stapyton Summit

I had some gear left up near between the sheeps bouldering area which is now no longer there. It was situated on a ledge just below the lip of a long steep wall. I was rained off when cleaning/scoping a highball which is still chalked up. Now a wire or a quickdraw on its own can be considered booty, but to get my 2 cams, 2 slings, cordelette and several biners off a little hidden wall which would normally see very few people come by with a rope, well I see that as stealing. I know it was a bit silly of me to leave it there a couple of months, but to get the gear involves either rapping off the top or a dicey traverse a good 8 meters up on fragile rock, which is quite an effort to go to for someone to claim 'booty'

If anyone has any information on this please let me know.

Your story sounds fishy. If you got rained off, how come its still chalked up?

If I was someone who frequented the area and noticed the gear sitting there for weeks and weeks on end unclaimed I would probably assume it was forgotten about or lost?

From memory I think it states In the official victorian climbing guide that after 4 weeks all unclaimed, untagged trad gear left in situe falls under the category 'BOOTY'!

;D

(On a slightly more serious note, I hope someone comes forward and you get your gear back Alrob.. perhaps some form of reward ie: BEER might help?)

It's improbable that someone who would make the effort to set up the gear in such an obscure place would 'forget' or 'lose' it. It's theft, plain and simple.

Oh its a given that beer will be involved if I get the gear back. I'm not angry about it, just in case whoever has it is scared to return. I'd just appreciate it back, and annoyed it was taken. Slate wiped cleaned. I hold no grudges :)

And I don't see where this 'fishy' business is coming from One Day Hero. Are you suggesting I'm lying about leaving the gear there? I find it quite rude that the only thing you say in here questions my honesty.

So to answer your question, chalk is still on the wall because it overhangs about 60 degrees. The gear was in/on a small ledge at the top, which itself it capped by a 4 meter 60 degree roof to the top of the cliff. Therefore, rain does not run directly onto the wall to wash the chalk off. The gear was used to in order to pull myself closer into the route.

Your skepticism about my 'story' is not required please.

So, you were in this completely watertight cave, and a few drops started to sprinkle outside, and you had to leg it so fast that you couldn't pause to clean the toproping gear for your boulder problem??

Up this way, bouldering is commonly practiced without ropes.

Don't get me wrong, its not your integrity that I'm questioning......

I'd be annoyed as well if I left gear in the rock for a couple months and it was taken. Annoyed at myself for being so naive as to think it would still be there.

Losing your gear after leaving it for a day or two is unlucky. Losing your gear after leaving it there for months is your own fault.

Gear and slings from bailing off a route is booty/not? Gear and slings from bailing from a boulder is.....? Hilarious?

No Paz, you are totally wrong (according to Maxo)

Not only that but a friend of mine overheard someone telling davidn that he brushes them as well...

It is theft.

It's not like bail gear or a stuck cam. Fair request to ask for it back...

M9 - some of your finds are a little disturbing. Davidn will have some explaining to do when his manager sees this latest addition!

The only way it isn't theft is if the person who took it honestly thought it was abandoned, or always planned to return it. As I said, I can't see how anyone could think than a fairly elaborate rig in an obscure place has been abandoned, any more than you could think the same of rap chains at the top of a sport climb.

Want me to break it down to monosyllables for you mattjr?

No it's not, it's the fault of the degenerate, parasitical piece of filth who took it.

Always amazes me how some on chocky can justify someone stealing another persons gear

Concerned are we?

ODH someone gave it to me, but reckoned he got it from a bloke who recently graduated from tests that included crawling around in smokey places, and was out celebrating with his other firey mates who were likewise wearing various bits of fire-engine-red garb(!) ~> while chanting in unison "get down low, and go, go, go!"

Feeling left out? Don't worry. If you lose your job the fireys will likely have another recruitment drive...
& they have great brushes for slabbing!
You know you want to!
;-)

You boulderers are a secretive lot, but I did accidentally find some dirty pics amongst other detritus left lying around in bouldering caves in the bush while cleaning up Australia one weekend. Unfortunately they are too shocking for posting on this site, so the boulderer fantasies(?) are safely disposed of for now...
Heh, heh, heh.
