This sounds like two completely separate threads to me. Could one of the mods please split them up and move to the appropriate forum? Maybe Gear Lust and Accidents & Injuries?

Graphite works really well. You can get it from most hardware places.

I actually thought Mr Sheen was a pretty good answer. Just sit there and polish it. Gotta do something with the odd socks.
