Well I hope you had fun regardless Aaron.

Its surprising how easily ropes can get stuck if you are not careful about them twisting. If you get twists above the edge then you can get screwed easily. Chains and a rap ring or more vertically aligned bolts often assist the smooth pulling of a rope.

i'd STRONGLY oppose going up there to modify the rock

since that first time I've rapped off there scores of times and NEVER got ropes stuck again. Once you see which groove it is and what it does, it's obvious how to avoid the problem. if you do what the ACA description says, you'll be fine. I am happy to improve the ACA info if you have any suggestions.

M9: the anchor is as well positioned as possible. the top of Taipan offers very few spots for top-access anchors, this is the best option, and the bolts are in the right spot.

I hope you get the ropes back Aaron.

In the mean time: How about a TR for us? You were on the Seventh Pillar right?

WM you're probably right. I will probably feel better once I get my ropes back and/or see the groove in question.

OP yes that epic day was spent on seventh pillar, did the 22/M1 version (sort of). I will try to put a TR up later this week, I really like this forum so I think I'll stick around...

Heh, heh, heh.

Seriously; thanks for the feedback WM. It sounds fine to me now, given your subsequent experiences there.
Abseils are part of the adventure and although it can be no fun having stuck ropes, there are more skills to the climbing game than at first meet the eye, with rigging of ropes including recognising the traps, being but another of these.

That is almost a surprising statement given the amount of times a new poster comes on and gets flamed to hell! Anyway welcome Aaron, I'm sure you'll see a few familiar faces around ;-) Hope we get the rope back!

Stuck ropes have been the cause of numerous deaths. It quickly can become extremely serious in less forgiving terrain.

*** UPDATE ***

I just called my friend Gareth who was up in the grampians bouldering, and he said he happened across someone called Tee and his girlfriend who had just got my ropes down. Gareth convinced them to hand the ropes over, so hurray for me I have them back!

Thank you to Tee and his girlfriend for getting the ropes down and Gareth for doing the collection for me. Unfortunately since Gareth didn't go up there himself he didn't get any pics of the situation at the top so I still haven't seen the groove that they got stuck in. Oh well, this will not be the last Taipan wall has seen of me so I imagine plenty of further opportunity to be back there and have a look for myself.

Oh and for the record, if anyone knows how to get a box of beer from Melbourne to Arapiles campground where Tee&Co are staying... I may be up there next weekend, or may be going back to gramps instead, depends on where the people with cars are going...

Fortuitous timing by your friend Gareth.

>box of beer

Mr T might benefit more from some glasses as it seems he has trouble reading the size of brand new Muiras ?
