Bouldering after a caesarean?

Sorry if this is a boring topic for most, but I was wondering if some of the awesome climbing mums on this site might be able to help me out with some advice. I was just wondering how long it takes after a caesarean before you can go bouldering again. Does anyone have any experience of this, or advice you could offer me please? Sorry to blatantly trawl for information on my first post, but I'd really appreciate your stories. Thanks!

Well I was cranking V5 that afternoon, but I think WWS didn't feel ready until the following day.

Sorry to be crass, but why did Mr Wide Wet and Slippery need a caesarion?

It is unfortunate that your first post thread has been hijacked so soon, but as a long time frequenter of Chockstone I can see the in-house humour in simey's post.

If you don't manage to get specific climber experience-based information off this site, then you may find some related information here?

You're confusing Caesarean with Circumcision Simey.

Hi Jane, I haven't had a caesar, or indeed any children at all for that matter, but I imagine your midwife or obstetrician could provide advice if you can find comparable activities for them to understand the loads you put through your core whilst climbing. Maybe ask about when you would be ok to do sit ups or hold the plank position. Take some photos or video of what you do in to your next appt to help them understand. Most bouldering is pretty intensive, so I imagine, unless you have a source of pretty cruisy bouldering, it's going to be a while. Do you do any roped climbing? Getting back on easy roped climbing might be a little as the 6 weeks of general recovery. Try asking how long until you could climb a ladder. Then a vertical ladder. Then the underside of the ladder.

Good luck, Wendy

6 weeks? I don't recall the advice, my ex-partner had a caesar 4-and-a-bit years ago, they slice through a few abdominals so you need to wait for them to heal before putting them under stress.

Start slowly but get some exercise, it helps recovery.

You're confusing circumcision with castration, hero.

My girl had 2 natural births so obviously different but found we had to be very careful when se started climbing because her abs and groin muscles had copped it, and she kept getting niggly injuries pulling muscles doing too much too soon. I'd say just listen to your body and take it very easy for a while while you build up core strength but definitely get advice from someone who has a clue what theyre talking about

Hi Jane, I had a big ab cut (118mm) a few years ago. a sort of vertical ceasar if you can imagine that. my surgeon told me the ab wall gets 90 % of strength back in 3 weeks. i told her i was a climber & she said keep off for a few more weeks extra at least. i went climbing at 6 weeks- just kept the grades low but i have developed an hernia at one end of the scar which needs to be sorted out some time. So if it were me i would enjoy the baby and keep off boulders as long as i could tolerate not going stir crazy, even go & see your surgeon & have him/her check you over before going out again (they wont give you an absolute OK to protect themselves legally, but they should tell you if they think you are going to hurt yourself). . also be careful picking things up! best wishes

Really? They gave no advice on expected recovery times and what to be careful with? Given that they cut all the way through several layers of rather essential core muscles (which have also been traumatised by 9 months of stretching), I would of thought they had to tell you a bit about managing it. Like even being careful or avoiding lifting your baby!

6-8 weeks is standard tissue healing time. I'd be doing very gentle exercise in that time period - not going bouldering! Much as I hate telling women they shouldn't do things whilst pregnant or after giving birth, I reckon the long term health of your core strength is worth a little caution. Still, it's not my body that just been cut open, so whatever Jane thinks is worth it! But the best advice will come from a professional used to dealing with cesearian healing, as long as you can help them understand what it is you want to do, because many people have preconceptions about climbing that are not realistic. So my main advice is work out how to clarify what you want to be able to do to your medical professional and talk about it with them. There's probably some fun but easy stuff that can be done relatively soon and build back up to pushing yourself.

Hi Jane,

Think about your child growing up with boulderer for a mother. Oh, the shame.

Just don't do it, for their sake.

For a second post, that's a corker. Welcome to chockstone and good luck with the recovery.

I was back in action 3 months after a radical (open cut) prostatectomy a couple of years ago. Very similar incision to a c section, according to my partner. Totally different outcomes of course. Your obstetrician should be a good reference point. The point i am tying to make is, surgery is surgery. However, recovery is another thing. Stay positive and smell the roses. "What is babies name?"

I spent a bit of time at area 51. Hence the operation. They made me have it.

Go out to the north black range. Plenty of slabs and good easy problems.

I'll preface my answer by confirming I've never had a c-section. My wife on the other hand suffered through 2 of them.... Both were hard on her and took 6-8 weeks of recovery before she could really get back into a semblance of everyday life. Look after yourself, ease back into everything, follow your rehab/physio and enjoy your drugs..... And little one;)

EDIT: deleted a duplicate post.

Exactly how does that thread relate to me and ODH (whom I have only ever climbed with once)?

But hey, if I am around I am keen to do some climbing (even if you are the wrong sex).
