Sad news. The photo of the queue going up the mountain in the above article is astounding.

I think i remember reading somewhere that history and stats say a certain % of people who attempt Everest die....so with that many is 5 people that out of the ordinary..not saying it still not a tragedy....more than it not that surprising with that many people on the mountain.

Quick google search and its confirmed...

That queue is unbelievable! It looks like a modern day version of miners climbing the Chilcoot Pass in the Yukon in the winter of 1897 - 1898!

That link was interesting, but as ODH pointed out once before on another thread, summits vs deaths (about 12%), isn't the true picture because it doesn't take into account all the (unsuccessful?), non-summit ascents.

As an aside; I reckon that queue in the picture has about 150 people in it...

Yeah nothing like going to the Himalaya to get away from it all!

Yes, people die on Everest. This year, unlike 1997, there was no storm or bad weather.

So, does that shot show camp 3, with the conga line heading up to the south col?

Cool photo! The guys at the front must be really smashing..........they've got the peleton strung out like crazy.

There must be over a hundred (?) people there. Imagine that lot waiting their turn at the Hillary step ! Its ridiculous, Im hoping its a joke. Then again probably not..I reckon some photos of Mont Blanc could put this to shame.

It doesnt appear to be a joke. I checked the original post link and it contains a 4 page article that makes reference a number of times to 300+ climbers and sherpas squeezing into a weather window of opportunity...

This along with many rescue type evacuations, some 16 yr old girl becoming youngest female summiteer and confusion about her dying on the descent...

It sounds like a circus there, and the season isn't finished yet!

Regardless of what people say about climbers, at least we're a polite bunch.

"With over 750 climbers from 32 separate expeditions reported to be attempting Everest this season, it seems that in the modern Everest era, rockfall and collapsing ice could well be secondary concerns to traffic-jam logistics on the sparse good weather days."

~> The comment seems to sum up this form of 'modern' mountaineering.

No bad weather in a year on Everest. I did the Eyrie at Mt Vic once and it rained, 2010 it was. Good news Allie Pepper, Blackheaths highest empress of the summits is safe and sound after an attempt on Lotse.
