ganglion cyst removal

Anyone ever had one removed? Apparently, after I gave myself a nice cut on the small finger right on the knuckle, the fluid from the joint poured in and couldn't evacuate.. now I have a small ganglion cyst there.

Doctor said to leave it if its not annoying me but its quite painful when its cold and it makes certain climbing positions painful.

I'm weighing up surgery but I am not too psyched on having someone cut my finger open and play around near the tendon sheathe and the joint (which needs to be "cleaned)...

Hoping to find out if anyone else knows much about it.

Cheers

I've had some of these things pulled out. They go deeper than you would think, hurt like hell when they cut 'em out, but not too bad. Heal pretty quick and leave a decent scar. A few hrs of pain, long term gain.

My Girlfriend just had one aspirated on her wrist... basically there are 3 options apparently;

1. Surgery
2. Cortisone injection
3. Aspiration

Aspiration is where they use ultrasound and basically suck the "liquid" out, apparently this hurts a fair bit but doesn't leave a scar. Cortisone injection helps kill off the fluid, they seem to do this along with the aspiration, or at least that's how it went for the g/f, she wasn't keen on a scar so it seems like the easier solution.

Or 4 Belting it with a book. Have a look at this on You Tube Bible Bump Ganglion Cyst Bashing Funny!
I did with a book and fixed it, described the process to a friend who had a ganglion on his foot.He belted it with a book and almost passed out and vomited with the pain!

Gavo,

I had mine treated in march, but unfortunately it is coming back.

The Doc first put in a bit of local, then sucked out what he could with a large guage needle, then finished off with cortisone for good luck. It was great for a few months.

When I was googling ganglion treatments, apart from surgery, the most effective treatment was a hyaluronidase injection (anti coagulant enzyme from a leach).
However, my Doc looked at me blankly when I mentioned it.

Good luck with it and let us know what you choose.

I have contemplated surgery, but can't quite commit to it.

Is there anything the good book can't fix? I mean aside from inter-denominational theological issues; world peace, polygamy, evolution...

If you can't bring yourself to do it I'd be happy to pop over and deal out a bit of vigilante "bible bashing" for you Gavo;)

I reckon it depends on the size of the ganger. Think B1 B2 B3. Bible, mormon, gita.

The age-old method was to hit it with a Bible. I've had a ganglion on my wrist a few times and have used the book method successfully each time. You of course need to make sure that you're not going to do greater harm than good which was pretty easy with the wrist as you just put your hand on the table and have someone whack it with a large book. I chose a copy of Grey's Anatomy - apart from it being suitably hefty for the job, I'm athiest and thought it a far more appropriate choice than "the good book".

Had an evil old Irish nun as a prep teacher, often used to bash me on the back of the head with the good book... maybe she mistook my head for something else.

I had a big one on my wrist for years, it would come and go and was pretty painful, also restricted movement of my wrist, I was considering the bible option but before taking action accidentally bashed it on a table, hurt like hell for a second but sorted it out good and proper, no probs since and that was years ago

Sorry about the delay, I saw something shiny and ran after it.

Anyway, I am waiting on a referral to a surgeon and I'll go speak to him about it. Obviously surgeons like to cut people so won't really want to discuss aspiration or beating it but I will bring those up.

I am hoping to wait til after my coming climbing trips so I might have to just endure it a month or two.

It is worst in the cold.. noticed it on the weekend... the pain gets quite intense when its cold...

Anyway I'll keep ya'll posted of the cutting and the bashing and whatnot

Gavo,

I'll be interested to here how the surgery goes, and how long you'll have to rehab it before climbing again.

I'm probably in the 'same boat' as you, but I'm in denial

A ganglion cyst could be a swelling that always seems on or around joints and tendons within the hand or foot. The dimensions of the cyst will vary over time. It’s most often located around the wrist joint and on the fingers.

I had Ganglions on both wrists and like yours, they were occasionally painful. I also subscribe to a fairly DIY approach to medicine (when I was 15, I cut a wart out with a pair of scissors that had been "sterilised" by running them under boiling water - the wart site had been frozen by ice from mum's freezer).

One day last year I cracked it with them while driving - it hurt to turn the steering wheel - and promptly recalled a conversation with my buddy Yuri who regularly smashed his with a book. So I simply lined up the cyst with the outside of the steering wheel and whacked it as hard as I could (to assist with this you can simply imagine that the person in front of you hasn't moved up far enough into the intersection - driving a car has advantages here).

It hurt, but only as much as you would expect from smashing your wrist onto a steering wheel. And sure enough I felt the feeling of cold fluid dissipating through the rest of my wrist. I did the other wrist too, although that took a couple of goes as I wussed out mid strike. Didn't get the satisfaction of the fluid dissipation that time either but both sides went down instantly and neither has come back. That was 6 months ago.

Need I add: I am not a doctor. Hindsight tells me that with that force I was just as likely to break my wrist or damage some internals ... but I didn't. If you plan on using part of your car, best be accurate. Otherwise use a book like Yuri recommended in the first place ...

Dr Burns had these I think - he's on this forum from time to time.
