I don't think I'll ever go to the grampians, and especialy summer day valley, without at somepoint thinking of this accident and unfortunate loss of life. We will not forget.

It's hard for us to put a statement in this forum, because of all the unqualified statements before. We are the friends of Leo who he has been climbing with on the 14 of May. I think in such circumstances the people who don't know what happend should shut up. We don't like such disscusions in public, but Leos father Peter asked us to clarify what happend on this day.

Leo was climbing on Diazepham. In about 4-5 meters he put a nut. 2 meters above this protection he wanted to put one more nut, he accidentally lost the nuts and controll. He felt and the nut protection was dislodged. Passing the ledge Leo felt all in all around 10 to 12 meters....

We hope this short abstract helps everybody to understand better what happend. Take care.....

Thank you for your post. I understand how difficult it is to write such details for strangers. Reading this I can think of many similar events which luckily did not have a tragic outcome. I feel for you all.

Thank you Timo. I appreciate that it is difficult to discuss. Understanding what happened may help others.

I just heard the sad, sad news about five days ago. Leo was a funny guy and a pretty decent climber. Never thought it would be the last I’ll see of him when he climbed in the Philippines after we met you guys in Tonsai. We enjoyed climbing with him, drinking with him, bumming and fooling around with him, and for the short time I knew him, I can say he was a good man, a funny guy who left a lasting impression on the people he met.

Makes me realize how easily things can take the wrong turn so quickly, and how this sweet pursuit of ours that gains us friends can just as easily take them away.

If it’s any consolation, at least the last thing he was doing was one thing he really loved. I guess I can say Leo was making the most out of life for the past months, traveling and climbing all over.

The guys who climbed with Leo in Cebu wanted me to extend their deepest sympathies to his parents, Peter and Andrea, his brother Tobi, the rest of his family, his friends, especially you, Timo and Tatjana.

It was an honor to have met and climbed with him. May he rest in peace.

Let’s all be careful out there.

Hello Trick,
thank you for writing and your well felt and sympathetic words.

hello climbers,
speakers and readers in this forum,

I thank you all very much for your contributions. Your deep shock and feelings of sorrow about Leo’s fall and death did reach us and showed us, that we shall wear him self in our breasts and souls. Anywhere he spent time during his travel, he had gotten friends and fine guys and fellows. Representatively for all I may remember his friends on the Philippine Islands. They intend to have a memorial especially for Leo at July 14.
Thank you all for your condolences. Every word could help us a little bit in our extreme hard situation.
By the way there are also good news. The administration of the Grampians has agreed to set e bench of red gum wood in Summerday Valley along the path from the parking to the Wall of Fools. On the bench will be attached Leo’s plaque with his name and dates of his life. So every climber or visitor is invited to have a little while of repose and consideration. Additional they will plant e tree for Leo.
If you want you can have a look next time/months into “ARGUS”, the official publication of the Victorian Climbing Club (find in Internet). Maybe there will appear an article about setting the bench and the memorial on Philippines.
Best wishes and please be careful by climbing. No risk!

Peter

The bench for reflection / contemplation, and the planting of a tree are good ideas to help us 'keep' Leo.

The whole sad incident is extremely sobering to those of us who climb.

Thank you for sharing this update news with us Peter. Our thoughts are with you and Andrea.
