Mallet Finger

Whilst buggering around with a footy over the weekend I've managed to injure my middle finger, the tip is now permanently bent and it won't straighten.

I've searched the net and it appears I've got mallet finger which requires months of splinting to repair!!!

I'm trying to get in to see a sports physio today but I was wondering if anyone has had a similar injury & how long it took to heal?

Bugger, this was going to be the year I started knocking things off my tick list instead of just adding them!!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

sounds like a sky hook to me... can you put any weight on it or does it hurt too much?

So two and a half weeks ago, on the first day of week's trip to Tasmania with well known atheist Winston Smith, we're at Hillwood and I throw for a hold during a big deadpoint move. I must have been so focussed on the hold I was going for that I didn't notice a projection of some sort and - whack! - very sore pinky.

Of course I didn't want to spoil the holiday so ignored it for the next week and didn't see a doctor until last week, when the finger had developed a distinct bend. Winston has kindly sent me this link: mallet finger.

I've ripped a bit of bone out along with the tendon, which the specialist says (worth every bit of the $200 he charged me) is actually better, as it stimulates more blood flow.

The clown of a doctor in the ER I first went to fitted the wrong kind of splint. I guess that's why he's not earning big money like the specialist. When I get the right splint this afternoon it's got to stay on for 8 weeks!

One handed climbing here I come.

To fully give me value for my money the specialist threw in the added tidbit that he could see on the x-ray that I've got some arthritis in the knuckles and signs of minor trauma to the adjacent fingers, most likely because of years spent keeping wicket when I used to play cricket.

Going to ER in Jan/Feb, unless you're badly injured, you're probably going to get an intern in their first month of ignorance. At any time, for sporting injuries it's best to just look on ED treatment as a patch-up until you can get to a specialist, as the EDdoctors are practising emergency medicine, not orthopaedics. If ED bounces you straight to a specialist then you've hit the jackpot.

I have mallet finger on little finger of R hand. Did playing rugby way back when. Never really got it fixed and it's been like that ever since - has a permanent 30 degree or so band that I can't completely extend. No residual pain or loss of function/strength but was a bit annoying when pregnancy testing cattle (think about it)...

It's what I get for making that joke about John Hopoate and ODH.

the other hand will surely become strong.
Does the finger need more rest after 8 weeks before start using?

Don't think so George.
