It's all over Instagram mate.
A boulderer fell off a highball and busted his ankle.

Also a climber/bouderer carried out of Venus Baths yesterday. That's 3 climbing/bouldering rescues at Arapiles/Grampians in 4 days.

I saw more boulderers than climbers and hikers combined in the Grampians on Friday. So the ratio of accidents to participants might not be out of whack.

Yes, I was surprised at the number of boulderers at Stapylton on Saturday evening. I think it's probably just random that we've got this accident cluster. This thought is of course not based on any meaningful data or analysis.

I'm going to go with the observational and anecdotal evidence that more bouldering=more accidents. I very rarely boulder but I've broken my ankle 3 times bouldering. I may have a bung shoulder at the moment, but I've climbed 3+ days a week for 28 years for a total of 2 fingers, 2 shoulders and an ankle. That makes the ratio of injuries to bouldering a lot higher. Add to that being told the other day that there is a serious injury every week on the bouldering gym my friend works at and another friend sporting a bouldering broken ankle, bouldering is not coming out in a good light.

It never was regarded as being in a good light by serious climbers.
Did something change along the way?

Yes, when I started just bouldering Stugang... ;-)

Yeah I was posting it on the instagram.
Boulderer was on highball in Legoland on the trail up to VDL, we were hiking out, saw chopper, bumped into the guys mates. As I heard from them, one of the pads was up against a rock and so slightly sloping, guy landed on the slopy bit, ankle rolled. Friend up in QLD knows him, prognosis is just a broken ankle.
Also heard the chopper again on Sunday when we were at Watchtower.
That's the 3rd time I've seen someone pulled from a broken ankle with that chopper, 1st hand, in the past year. 2 times for a bouldering incident, other was an abseiler at Werribee Gorge.
I'd be curious to hear the medics thoughts on climbing and bouldering. They must get so many call outs for busted ankles.

I've seen a couple of busted ankles in bouldering gyms. I heard someone make a comment, although it may have been somewhat tongue in cheek, that they had considered building a bouldering section in their gym, but they would have had to make space for an ambulance bay also.
Still, bouldering must not be that bad compared to the injuries that come out of other hobbies like motorcycling, skiing/snowboarding, downhill racing etc.

. . . Exception that proves the rule!
(Insert simey face here).
Daliah , do you wear a helmet when you highball?

Nah , they’re safe , ‘cos most of them are sensible enough to wear helmets.

1. No. Nothing worthwhile protecting.
2. Going on the above discussion, helmets won't stop you breaking ankles which appears to be the most prevalent injury.

...All these new bouldering gyms are going to have to do fall passes for all these new climbers. They can attach their newly acquired fall passes to their beanies.
I assume the person fell off Towering Inferno? That problem is very serious for V4 and a very sketchy landing! No matter the amount of pads...

Same as my handle on here - jacksonclimbs
Pads were sitting under 'wet with excitement' - V6, when I went past. It's not a crazy tall highball, but I think an awkward fall can bust an ankle from a couple of feet anyway. Not sure exactly how high the guy was, didn't see the point in giving the guy's mate the full 3rd degree on it.

I can't see anything on https://www.instagram.com/jacksonclimbs/ about this? Am I looking at the right one?
Wet With Excitement and The Tunnel are both definitely high enough to break an ankle.

You may laugh but this is part of the entry requirements to one of the trendy new gyms in Sydney. You need to demonstrate than you know how to land arse first before they will sign off your waiver
