This makes me very sad. My condolences to family and I am sure the whole Victorian climbing community will be in shock

This is terribly tragic, I knew these two only peripherally but was struck by their open friendliness, willingness to chat and competence in climbing, this is an appalling loss for climbing, for Victoria, and most especially family and friends, my thoughts are with you.

A tragedy. I knew them both, and I know many who learnt the mountains from Stu. He was a very well respected guide in the New Zealand Mountains. A great loss for many. A wealth of knowledge and skill and on occasion he graced chockstone with it..

I don't really have words to express the sorrow and loss. The mountains can be unforgiving, but nobody would expect this to strike Stu and Dale. :-(

Sad news and adds to an already bad tally this season for NZ mountaineering.
My condolences to their family, friends, and acquaintances within MUMC.

Following the link to Stuart's profile I saw that he had described a couple of routes that he done on the Watchtower faces over the last ten years. I've added them to TheCrag.

Thanks Kieran.

He was ascending new routes only a week before the tragedy,

His legacy will live on in many people and many places.

I won't say it was a "good" memorial service on Friday, because the fact that it had to occur at all is just sh*t, but there were many very moving speeches from friends, family, and colleagues of both Stuart and Dale. Those of us who didn't know them all that well, or people who only knew them from one sphere of their multifaceted lives, were given a privileged view into two the lives and histories of two people who clearly had such a positive and motivational influence on so, so many people (demonstrated by attendance - 1000 people at a guess). These speakers encouraged us all to focus our lives on doing the things we love, and spending time with the people we love (ideally both at once, as Stuart and Dale so often did). I think a teaching colleague of Stuart's summed it up best (and I'm paraphrasing) - 'lives fully lived, but sadly incomplete'.
