A Victorian man is dead after plummeting 50 metres from a cliff face in South Australia's Flinders Ranges.
The man was rock climbing with a group of friends before he fell to his death on Thursday, shortly after 3.30pm.
Police, paramedics and State Emergency Service crews raced to the popular climbing area at Upalinna, about 40 kilometres north of Hawker, but they could not revive the man.
"The man was with rock-climbing companions at a well-known location on the south-eastern corner of Wilpena Pound, when he fell about 50 metres onto a ledge," a South Australian police spokesman said.
His body will be retrieved at first light on Friday and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Tragic news. I assume it was at Moonarie. Thoughts are with all the climbers who are camped out there together.

not knowing any more details about what happened and conscious of the impact this tragedy has on family and friends, i always found climbing at moonaire a few grades up on the seriousness factor because of how difficult it would be to get medical assistance, and downgraded my climbing ambitions a fair bit. i hope the other climbers who are there support each other, take that extra bit of effort to check each other, and that the upcoming online 'review' of what happened is as positive as possible considering the circumstances.

I am really sorry to hear of this, and my condolences go to the bereaved.
This kind of news hits hard.
We really are a small community when it comes to it...

The abc links below now have a short video where police officer essentially says "lost his footing above Great Wall"
A real tragedy - I could be wrong but I believe this is the first fatality at Moonarie.

I noticed in the video they mentioned the climber's friends took the initiative of ferrying water to the rescue crews. Moonarie is well known for the uphill battle of a walkin (I have never been there, but I hear it's a mission of a walk). Good on you guys for supporting the rescue crews, this would have made a huge difference to a rough day on the job for them.

Someone involved asked me to post this on her behalf:I’d like to offer a heartfelt thankyou to the group of climbers who came to our aid on the day. They really went above and beyond. Even after the incident, they went out of their way to feed and look after my whole group and to assist the rescue crew as much as they could. I am so grateful to have had such generous people nearby in such a tragic situation.
