Phasmid, Balls Pyramid Video 5-Oct-2016 At 2:05:01 PM Kable459

A Victorian based film maker called Asher Flatt is making an in-depth video dealing with the Phasmid and Balls Pyramid. His promo shows that he has already interviewed Dave Roots and recently interviewed Jim Smith and I. This appears to be a project that is well worth supporting as Asher has a positive attitude to climbers in contrast to that seemingly adopted by the Lord Howe Island Board and the NSW Government.

Asher has started a Crowd Funding Campaign and he would appreciate any donation, no matter how small. Just type in the link below to check out his promo.

An important chapter in the SOUTH PACIFIC PINNACLE: The Exploration of Balls Pyramid dealt with the Phasmid (Lord Howe Island Stick Insect). Climber, Dave Roots discovered a specimen in 1964 and Jim Smith found an exo-skeleton near the summit in 1969. These were important finds as the insect was extinct on Lord Howe Island owing to rats from a shipwreck eating them out.

The climbers' discoveries have been largely ignored by the team that re-discovered the Phasmid on a bush below Gannet Green in the early noughties. This team contributed to the continuation of the ban on climbing that has now been in place since 1986 as they also processed climbing applications. In an interview afterwards they stated that their trip was 'A Boys' Own Adventure' and that the Pyramid was a fabulous place to visit.

However, the ban has been somewhat counterproductive as climbers are the only ones who can reach the heights. The importance of this was illustrated in 2014 when a 'black ops' team discovered living phasmids on the Cheval Ridge just below the summit. Such specimens would be useful in diversifying the genetic makeup of the captive colony bred from a small number of the insects. Who knows what else remains to be discovered on this amazing piece of rock by the controlled return of climbers?
