And a leader to take me up climbs. A cool one, with a tattoo. And a rack, I need that too. And a ride to araps. A leader, a tattoo, a rack, a ride but not a club. That's all I need.

I'd say it would be much more desirable to be taught to climb by a regular climbing partner/mentor than to be taught via the VCC (or any other group).

I don't see anything wrong with asking for partners on here much more likely to find someone with a clue as opposed to at the gym.

Yes, an experienced regular climbing partner/mentor is desirable but bridh seems to be having
difficulty finding such a person (and has possibly disenfranchised a significant number of potential
starters because of an aversion to VCC).

At the gym you can at least get some idea of a person's ability (and suitability as a potential mentor)
but on an internet forum?

Internet's OK Mr Kuu. There are plenty of posts to judge the flavour of the tatoos on the foreheads of those who may hide them with helmets, (as per the thread you are familiar with, a little while ago). Besides anyone who likes a good cup of tea and who can survive chockstone flames is likely to be a potential friendly climbing partner in Derek's and my experience.

At the gym you can get an idea of how often they climb at the gym, that's about it. I had a run in with two guys at the gym last night - neither of them had the slightest understanding of climbing etiquette or the safety of others - but they looked the part, had their lead tickets, a rope and fanta pants even had dreads.....

On here you can possibly get a better idea of their knowledge - of course climb with them once and then make up your mind. You might also find some old bloke with time on his hands.

I've taught two people to lead trad and are currently teaching two more - I reckon the first two took at least 2 years before I was happy with where they were at (I know this sounds wanky but you know what I mean) it takes a lot of time to learn trad and be experienced in a variety of settings, that's a lot of VCC trips - assuming you get the same quality teaching.

Ok, thought I would wade in now seeing as the thread is well and truly its own living breathing entity. (Besides, Bridh first post with his contact details is still the one you see first. And you don't really need to post in order to climb with him.)

The VCC doesn't 'teach' as such. We don't have trips ie beginner trips and everyone is in a group and the lesson begins.It's pretty much like what you do rolsen1. We have leaders who will climb with a beginner, understanding exactly that. That they need to be watched. That they will climb something within the beginners range. And when the time comes, just like you do, they will be helped/mentored to start leading. It just means that rather than jumping on higher graded climbs and assuming your belayer knows what they are doing - the trip is targetted for beginner climbers to attend. And as leaders we all understand that on the beginner trips. The trip leader that runs the trip will help a beginner to find a leader that is experienced.Sometimes a bit daunting for some. Yep, it's pretty much the same as going out with a group of climbers as many on here do.

And aside from our çlub version of 'dib, dib, dib, a salute to the sun and a quick howl before we set off for the days climbing(mandatory) you would never know we were a club. Just ask any of our now members if they knew what was coming.......
