Given that Jetstar will fly to NZ come December 1 (starting special price have been suggested at $139 one way!!). With greater competition on the cross Tasman route, hopefully all carriers will provide better prices making Castle Hill even more viable!

return airfare to NZ for under $300. Time to sell your ropes people and invest in a crash pad!

Heres the site to consult for Flock Hill access http://flockhill.blogspot.com/. The only proviso for climbing at Flock is to use the road rather than jump the fence at Cave Stream car park. Simple.
Prebble and Gorge Hills are still out of bounds but who cares? they are hard to get to and theres still 12000 problems to do in the other fields before we need to worry about the extra walk.
Spittle Hill guide is cheap and worth it.

Heres a site for you to keep an eye on the weather at Castle Hill http://www.castlehill.net.nz/

For transport, try this. they have a deal going. http://www.rentadent.co.nz/portal.asp?categoryid=304

Al, if you come over yell out. Would be good to see you again. I can show you how well I'm falling off Beautiful Edges these days.
Tel, The disk hasn't arrived yet.

Saw a Jetstar ad on TV about the sale already this morning... Sale ends 10 August or if sold out, so those planning on going over to NZ at Christmas better be quick!

OK, I plan to be there september 12th to october 2nd. I will most likely hire a car, so if anyone wants to get a lift to and from the crag or share a car, drop me an email or pm. So psyched.

Does anyone have any tips on stopping kea from eating tents? I'm planning on getting a crappy car camping tent so my nice macpac doesn't get eaten, and won't store food in it, but any other tips?

Ok, so heres our plan so far-

Subaru Legacy 4WD from Omega Car Rentals- $89 a day for first 3 and last 3 days. Means we can ferry all our stuff + food + us + anyone else with us out to Craigieburn Campground, get ourselves sorted, then drop car back in Christchurch, then bus/hitch back out.

Burning in the subi, out on the highway, looking for some boulders, and what ever comes out way! Born to be a cliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimber! lol

Think we have sorted out the guidebook (Definitive Spittle Hill Climbing Guide), will have to order direct from New Zealand Alpine Club.

Ultimate Ticklist!
One Move Boulder
Lung Dyno
Lung Arete
Beautiful Edges
The Unrepeatable
Tuppi Master
Phoenix

and the "tell him he's dreaming" problem- Joker

any other suggestions??

i stayed at the farm, which doesn't require a car, because its a piss easy 10 minute max walk accross the famrers dead flat open paddock. this option is no longer available however, as the new owners did not wish to continue providing this service when the bought the farm late last year. you will need a car to get back and forth from craigeburn. i didn't stay there, so i can't be sure oflift availabilities

I'm coming out to Castle Hill in a week, sans car. I'll be in Christchurch on Sept. 3rd, and will hopefully be carpooling/hitching out to the boulders.

Er, anybody wanna climb with me?

drop me an email, (jmvos at csbsju dot edu)

hmmm fair point al... the idea with the 6 days of car was to minimise cost, but i guess if other people are there (which there will be) then maybe we can spread the love (read: dollars) around....

obsessedclimber - when in september are you going to be there? I'd be happy to pick you up from chch in return for a few dollars. I'll also happily give you a lift to the crag etc.

If I manage to get over there I'll be in the mountains, so no. Even thats looking pretty unlikely at this stage though. Still, with 3 weeks in Castle Hill coming up I can't complain too loudly!
