Fellow stoners there is a high likelihood I'll be based in Singapore for a short while soon so sharing any tips or recent experience of climbing in Singapore would be appreciated. Including where to live

Yes yes yes - I know that life and climbing in Singapore is as plastic as eds love life. However google gave an encouragingly long list of climbing gyms and there must be one where there is a chance of meeting people that get out on rock or is better for one reason or another.

Any tips appreciated - even better get in touch if you are living over there and want a partner (in door or outdoor). Not sure how long I'll be out there but 3or 4 months there next year at a minimum.
Cheers
Stu

There was a number of Singaporeans at Arapiles last weekend. We took to chatting.

Apparently the main local climbing is in a former quarry and has some dozens (I think he said) routes of varying grades. Granite I think. However the bolt spacing varies so seek local knowledge.

Otherwise, yes, Railay and the like.

Hi Stugang !

I've been based in Singapore for the last 6.5 years, so I know perfectly the climbing scene here. There are 3 main climbing gyms (climb asia, onsight and climb central), which are conveniently located in the heart of the city, and many more, although smaller in size or located in the "suburbs" (Climber labs, NUS, Safra Yishun, Lycee Francais)... The best one in my opinion remains a bouldering gym named Kinetics where the setting is very smart... but it is not routes.

We do have a crag, which is an old quary... It is called the "Dairy Farm Natural Reserve" and it offers around 80 routes from F5a to F7c... It is mostly sport climbing but some routes can be done trad and there is even an aid route (where I did practice before jumping on Ozy!!!!). The routes are quite short from 7m to 20m max, one multipitch route of 2 pitches. You just have to be careful, the rock quality is not great and the high humidity in Singapore makes the climbing horrendous if you're not used to it. The quary is located in the middle of Singapore, in the Bukit Timah natural reserve. I have to say that, although it is not the best crag in the world, the reserve is just beautiful, it is 15 minutes away from the business district, it is so so so convenient... And yon don't even feel you are in the city anymore.

If you want real good quality climbing, you next stop is Kuala Lumpur, which is 350 km away from Singapore in Malaysia. It is a 4h drive from Singapore (50 minutes flight), provided you choose correctly your time to cross the border ! There, the crag is as big as Krabi in Thailand... it is called Batu Caves and recently, Bukit Takun has been developed to become the biggest crag in Malaysia. It provides really good climbing ! Sharma even opened a route there ! There is everything there: limestone, granit, tuffa, multipitch (up to 10 pitches) route from 4a to 8c, trad, etc....

Now, if you want the real adventure, you have Tioman Island, still in malaysia. It can be accessed via Mersing which is a mere 150km from Singapore... You will have at least 5 big wall route there, and really adventurous ones...

more info here on my blog: https://goo.gl/TOxShu

Unfortunately, here is the bad news for you: we are entering the Northen monsoon... Which means that the rains will be there most of the time, and trust me, you don't want to get into a thundery shower here while on the wall... Just to give you an idea, it is not possible to predict the weather accurately more than for a 3H period... Right now, the 'Sumatra squalls" are quite importants...

Don't hesitate to PM me if you want/need more info or just want to meet.
