Given the success of the Buffalo aid weekends I'm wondering how excited people would be to gather together and hurl ourselves at some offwidths. If there were someone in chocky land who was an offwidth gun, and would be willing to share your awesome skills, I reckon you'd be welcome.

I'm thinking NW outcrop at the You Yangs, towards the end of Jan... Any takers?

Wendy - You're welcome to lead the charge though it might be a little far. Also, BigChris has your Wild Country nut key. He'll bring it to Araps in the next few weeks . Touch base with him to organise delivery.

I'm afraid the Youyangs are probably not going to entice me to travel, but next time you are around, I could be persuaded on a little jaunt up such classics as Electra and Wizard of Ice. On the topic of learning to climb off widths - Australian ones just don't tend to be very technical. You can try all the fancy techniques known by climbers of splitter american sandstone offwidths, but most of the time we have deep flaring trenches that lend themselves to just getting in and wiggling. I'd like to say I have a mountain of knowledge to share, but I think I just have a good dose of stubbornness for getting in and wiggling. And I'm looking forward to the new old nut key!

Mike, Philly and I went out to NW outcrop on Saturday. Total spank fest. It was super fun and I feel like I don't even need to be a good climber to blast my way up some of those bloody big cracks :D (which is good for me as I'm not really that good ;) )

Is there a wide ticklist in the back of the select guide?

Hey Miguel, I'm always up for some offwidthing at the Youies. Plenty to do there. And then just around from NWern is 1984. Must be the hardest 18 around. Took me ages to just figure out how to get off the ground

Am interested due not having thrashed myself on an offwidth for a while, and also never having been to You Yangs; ... but not if it clashes with a VCC Australia day w/end trip to Buffalo, ... though ajf might confirm beween now and then if crowd-funding doesn't work for a VCC-Buff-trip to get off the ground?

Re having an offwidth crack gun to attend;
As you mentioned in context of aid w/end success earlier, a guru can point you at the task, but there is nothing like shedding your own blood to refine your attempted success.

I'm not running it this year.

If it were to be crowd funded, bookings would need to be made in August so that I could book sites in September for a trip in January... Not sure that'd work.

Stugang should get his fat arse out and climb and show us how it's done, :)

Rumor has it he was once not a pussy. Still yet to be proven...

Thanks for the (additional) confirmation ajf.

Hmm. A choice to be made.
Summer heat and half rope-length thrutch-fests at Youies;
or, ...
Alpine temps with acres of granite and potential new multipitch routes to be done, or simply just swinging in the breeze, hanging out in the shade on a portaledge on the Gorge North Wall; ... with a hipster promise of a beer afterwards, while sharing sh!tfaced grins...

Tough choice?
... ~> might be made easier if that disciple of He who konka Kerchoo, chooses to release his inner pussy for feral purposes at the OAS gathering??

Here's a link to an excellent old supertopo forum on offwidths, with an article on "Leavittation" from an old Mountain magazine. Leavittation is basically alternating handstacks and knee/calf locks, rather than the "traditional" groveling with chickenwings and armbars. What am I saying, offwidths always mean groveling for me. Enjoy...

There is also www.widefetish.com that has that article and a few more on off width technique.
Probably not the best thing to type into a work pc.

The first time I climbed it, it took me about 30 minutes of fluffing around just to get the sequence enabling me to get off the ground. Then I piked out and Phil finished it for me;)

Saturday arvo's or Sunday mornings are usually good for me. If it's Dog Rock could also do an evening during the week.
Are there any good off-widths at Mt Beckworth; the granite is smoother there.
