Hard Rock Climbing -- Need Partner

Heya, I'm seeking a climbing partner who is RELIABLE and EGO-FREE. I have had a string of flakey girls and ulterior-motive men, but all i want is a climbing partner who will be there on time, wants to climb, and is focused on *just* climbing! Easy, huh? Drop me a line if you're reliable and you can climb on any of these days: Mon/ Wed/ Fri/ Sun at the city Hardrock gym or at Nunawading.

Thanx. Autumn.

Have you tried these guys for a partner in the CBD? http://www.meetup.com/rockclimbing-115/

I was waiting for Andrew to post that so I wouldn't have to :)

However whilst you'll always be able to get a climbing partner. I wouldn't make any promises that the guys won't develop ulterior motives on the OP though ...

Nah none of the guys have hit on me ;p

I should mention that I'm not a member of the group but know quite a few of them.

From your profile -

>As at March 2013, doing indoor grades 19-21 and the occasional 23. Aiming to climb 25s by June. Getting lead climb >pass in June/ July 2013. Aiming to climb outdoors in Oct 2013.

>*desperately seeking a RELIABLE climbing partner*

Maybe you would find it easier to attract partners if you didn't restrict yourself to odd grades, is there any reason that you shun even graded climbs/climbers?

Nobody wants to hang out with "desperate" people, total freaking turnoff..........as is the weird schedule where you're climbing in the gym 4 days a week and have a definite plan to do outdoor climbing in October but not before (fyi, it is prime season in the Wimmera starting right now and going for about the next 2 months)

Surprisingly there do seem to be people who take gym bunnies out and teach them to climb from the goodness of their heart. I used to do a bit of it, but am way too old and grumpy now unless there are ulterior motives involved :)

Those ulterior motives are why I am always suspicious about you being happy to drop your grades to go climbing with me.

One Day Hero - lol. I do the even number too :P

I'm not a desperate person, but i feel a certain lack in my life without a reliable climbing partner. I'm not a gym bunny at all :( I just am training for the Melb Marathon so I run and climbing is my chill-out. I must admit i like the stretching too. :) I want to be strong to go outdoors... plus i don't have lead *grumble* I hear you're supposed to be strong to climb outdoors, to keep the same grades up.

I climb outdoors and I am about as strong as a wet tissue.

a wet tissue ha? I want to be strong and excel - perhaps i think it's my type-a personality :P ...but I just wanna be awesome!

re: Meetup group idea - I have joined but ugh, i find 99% of that group are beginners lacking the determination to stay for 4-5 hours with blood, sweat and tears.@pecheur - maybe i haven't met the "good ones" in the group?

Yeah you'll be fine with whatever strength you have. I climb outside and I'm a big weak sook...

It's way more fun getting strong climbing outside. Plus you'll learn all kinds of interesting rope management, anchor building, gear placement shenanigans.*

*depending on your partner:)

I never said they were any good, I said you'd always get a climb in. There are however some good climbers in the group, I'm sure you'll meet them if you stick with it. Who hangs around for 4-5 hours? I'm usually done and stuffed within three. Blood, sweat and tears? What the? That's just gross indoors :P If there's blood, sweat and tears there'd better be some sharp granite involved.

hehehe. i stay for the 4-5, or whenever the guy with the hoover comes by to encourage us out :) I like to go until I can no longer grip the wall, which often is around the 4-5 hour mark! :D

Seeing as this has turned into an unsolicited advice column..............it seems that you have a ton of motivation, in addition to the commonly held new climber belief that your well of motivation is infinitely deep. This is almost certainly incorrect, some day your psych will run out and you'll be over it. So why are you burning up your non-renewable stock of motivation on stupid 5 hour gym sessions where at least the last 2 hours are bound to be just flopping about in a state of uselessness?

The two things which will probably surprise you the most about outdoor climbing are;

1) indoor bullshit is a very mediocre simulation of real climbing, and despite being able to climb 25 in the gym you'll probably still get pounded in a very uncomfortable place by 18's at arapiles until you learn how to climb properly.

2) once you start spending a proper amount of time on rock, you just kind of naturally develop a feeling of superiority over (and contempt towards) gym bunnies..........even really nice people like Miguel can't seem to help themselves :)

OneDayHero,

Thanks for your observations. I am aware, however, that of course sometimes i feel shit, or things just don't work out. I climb the grades i feel a can climb... and since i've been training in various sports for about 8 years, I understand the body is not always operating to the same level as the mind. But I do love climbing. It makes me feel good - so sue me. I'm not a newbie BTW, just haven't been outdoors in a long time, and yeh, so i'm a little nervous about it now. Also currently do not have a car, so travelling to random spots with gear via PT is not high on my list.

To your points- 1) i get that too. Just like running on a treadmill is nothing like running outdoors. 2) as with running - i know, "gym people" annoy me too... but unlike treadmill runners- you don't need anything to step outside and run, yet going climbing outdoors involves a lot of prep and peeps and gear- which i do not have *right now* Give me a break. I'll get out there. Just focusing on other things right now. Let me set a PB in running this year in Oct and then yeh, outdoors climbing and me will become reacquainted.

My friend and his buddy experienced this phenomenon the other week. They comfortable lead 22/23 indoors (having never climbed outdoors until one fateful day) and were smashed at the You Yangs. On grade 17's...

I would have replied sooner but I was out getting smashed by the weather at Buffalo and then climbing at Tenerife today.... I'm tired;)

I try to be nice to all but when I can't, I remind myself that my harness has two belay loops! That's right gym bunnies, 2 belay loops suckas.... Talk about superiority!!!

And I thought I was the only one:(

Now you too can claim superiority... Or at least superfluousity;)

P.S. I may have just made up that word...

I am cross training.... and i think it's partly mind-set. If you believe you can, and you climb just for YOU then I find you excel. I see climbing like any sport I do; that with a clear mind, a goal, and hard work, you can pull through. Also I have obsessive tendencies :)

I don't think ticking 24s in the gym climbing 4 days a week in that time frame is beyond the realms of possibility.
