A good idea to catch up with a local, as the sumit is kind of indistinct, and you may miss it, and instead head for the near by Mt Townsend, which actually looks like a mountain.
If you're going to Kossy when there is no snow, then you follow that path and the signs. If you're going when there's snow, follow the ski tracks and signs.
As for roo meat, go for the young ones, and watch out for the Drop Bears. They bite.

Can I get to Townsend on the same tour or do I need to actually park somewhere else?

still on the same tour (if your quick), only a couple of km's away.
you probably still wouldnt find it too inspiring... picture rolling hills with the odd semi-steep bit thrown in. dust them in 12cm of snow for what they look like now...

I saw a bit about the Main Range Track from Charlotte's Pass and another access from Thredbo. Is it feasible to approach from one TH and exit the other? Which way is preferable? And is the entire route likely to be skiable late August?

Yes, but getting back to your car may be problematic. The normal "exit" from Charlottes is via oversnow (or ski several kms) to the train, which takes you back over to the main road, which is then a few kms from Thredbo.
You can do a big loop and see some of the other interesting features of the area in a day if you're a competent skier. A look at Blue Lake is worthwhile.
The bit from the Thredbo top station to Kossy is a bit dull; but there are some interesting craggy bits on the ridge to have a look at. Probably more to see going from Charlottes. You could go from Charlottes to Blue Lake, have peek a Townsend, go check out Kossy, and head back via Seaman’s Hut to Charlottes. You could more or less do a similar loop from Thredbo if you wanted
And is the entire route likely to be

I hope so.
