For shame... with a little fun thrown in.

Today being a glorious day we, (Stu, Big Chris, Little Chris and myself) decided to head out to Macedon for a little bit of respite from all responsibilities. It was a fun day as it was Little Chris's first day climbing in Aus, his first day seeing a Kangaroo, hearing a Koala and breathing in the goodness of Camels Hump. It was also great seeing a number of friends I hadn't seen in a while...

We arrived about 08:45 and proceeded to the lower tier where we played to our hearts content on Poxbow, Split Images, Law enforcer, Blind Justice, State of Shock, Sox Glo and many other box & sox climbs:)

After glutting ourselves down low the gang moved up to the Omega block and proceeded to play on Hawker before the main event of Witch. I've been looking to leading Witch for a while now and finally built up the gumption to give it a crack (heh heh heh)... I jumped on and made short work of the first 2/3's of the climb, loving every second of its fun; until I hit the crux. I'd previously Tr'd it with no problems though couldn't for the life of me pull through and into the upper crack. I tried to Layback, jam, muscle through, everything but I couldn't for the life of me, work the moves and pull through.

After my many futile attempts I was way too pumped and as I really wanted to get this climb clean I didn't resort to pulling on gear. After beating myself into submission I lowered off; delving deeper into shame with every metre lowered...

Anyone else have a climbing related tale of shame they'd like to share?

That's not shame, that's motivation.

Failing on Witch simply puts you in a league with a whole bunch of other creditable climbers who failed on that route at some stage in their lives but nevertheless went on to do bigger and better things.

At least I didn't cry, or swear;)

Thanks Simey & Mikl, I realize I'm in good company... Once the trauma has faded I'll get to work addressing some apparent weaknesses.

If you didn't swear / scream / grovel / cry / whimper like a little girl on the crux of that climb then you should feel proud of yourself regardless of the outcome. I've seen some wonderful tantrums on that route!

I'm tempted to lead it again just to drag some unsuspecting soul through the gym-climber's hell that is the last few metres...

No shame in failing.

i think that's far less shameful than never pushing yourself to the point of failure! :)
