Bl@ke, I've enjoyed reading your TR as they either mirror or forecast my own trips. I had a great day of
climbing at Mt Pilot back in July and am planning a long weekend at Arapiles on the 3-6/09/09. Any other
chockstoners going to be at Araps at the same time???
Thanks for sharing your tales; I've never lead a Trad climb and am pretty psyched to try some nice easy
multi-pitches, seconding everything before getting into something really easy and using every piece of
pro on my mates rack. I think a piece of pro every 10 cms should do me well...
Keep sharing the TRs and I'll post my Arapiles trip when I get back.

Who was it that said "if it's below your waist it's not a runner" I'm sure it was on here somewhere, x

I think HB said that. Might be in the intro to the Arapiles guide.

Without knowing the context of that remark it sounds a bit unusual to me.
Was he jesting?

Here's the full sentence from the guide:One of Australia's strongest climbers, Malcolm Matheson, used to quip 'If it is below your waist, it isn't a runner', referring to the fact that slumping onto your gear above your waist is a lot more preferable than lobbing onto protection a long way below you. Maybe Simey or Glenn can fill us in more?

Here's an old photo of him (far left):
Malcolm Matheson's nickname is HB. I think it was Peter Watling that told me it stood for Horsham Bruce and he gained it prior to getting involved in climbing, when Malcolm would come down to the pines in a car late at night and hoon about honking and such.
Here's an interview he did for Chockstone with a different story of where the HB nickname came from.
