The general plan is for Java , Trumpet and Claw to research and write the period from 1975 to 1985 .... and for Kim to write the first chapter ( rowing champion at sydney grammar to 2nd ascent of TotemPole 1974 etc ) and also the final chapter .... this will cover the period 1986 to 2015 BUT WILL NOT BE ABOUT WHAT KIM DID DURING THOSE YEARS ... but rather his thoughts and views etc on how climbing has unfolded in australia and around the world during the past 30 years ..

This book will be a MASSIVE catharsis both for Kim AND for those who have an intense fascination with the history and development of Australian climbing .... especially as Kim will have to address his ANGST in relation to SYL and to his very real brush with death in the Glass House Mountains .... when Kim sqeezes these 2 particular zits , Im sure the rest of his Carrigan Years memories will gush forth ....

" rowing champion at sydney grammar "

Now, that is a great example of an oxymoron.

Im hoping that for the good of aus climbing , Claw can let go of his vested interest in maintaining the number one myth that floats around ... that Kim Carrigan was a bumbly who only climbed hard cos he trained a lot ... and that Claw was the genius who could get off the couch and climb grade 45 ....solo ....at night .................Claw .... like you say in ur book ... at one stage Kim WAS the best climber in the world ...well now its time to find out how , why , when and who with .....

A few bits and pieces to throw into the R&D pot ...

>>> Kim Carrigan was the first Aussie to bring some over, used to sell them from the back of his van....

>>>Carrigan wrote an article, generally calling the Valley locals a bunch of myopic, xenophobic, flyweight, deli-bound wankers...

He also said and was lambasted for "The future of British climbing lies in the South of France"

I hold my breath and make no comment.....

Hey, Grammar won 1st and 2nd eights at the Head of the River in 1978. After that they realised that rowing was for pussies and decided to concentrate on debating, music, and hard core climbing :-)

=======================================

From Louise chockstone interview :

'...Kim Carrigan was definitely the biggest influence no doubt because it was early on. He and I got together after I'd been climbing only maybe less than a year. I first met him at Arapiles and then I went up to Mt Buffalo. I remember he was at Buffalo climbing this big corner and bridging. It was maybe grade 20 or something. And he wasn't wearing any undies! [laughs]... This is before we got together. Anyway, he was definitely a very powerful influence in my life. When I first got into climbing he was already starting to free Procol Harum (26) and things like that. He was very bohemian. He had this afro, that was like out here [gestures]. It was really quite stunning. After we got together he chopped it off short. But I remember this big afro and this little circle of admirers. [laughs]. ..............But yeah he actually encouraged me to climb with other women. We were about the same age, but he started climbing five years beforehand. When we first went to Yosemite Valley, he'd been there before, and he said "well don't expect me to climb with you, you'll need to find your own climbing partners. I'm climbing much better and I'm going to be doing this, this and this...". And I was a bit crestfallen, but then he did encourage me to find my own climbing partners and climb with other women. I met Evelyn Lees on that trip and we did lots and lots of climbing together. That's when my climbing really took off I think. We just went travelling together, went to a whole bunch of climbing areas in the States. I came back to Australia and she came over for a visit. So we climbed quite a lot together....'

>>>they realised that rowing was for pussies and decided to concentrate on debating, music, and hard core climbing :-)

So did Kim .... and it manifested at Araps ...with grading debating around the camp fire , punk rock / new wave and of cause pushing out with Procul 26...Fox 27 ... Cobwebs 28 (MM)...India 29 ....Masada/Ethiopia 30 ...and 99% of SYL / Ring Route / Lourd 31.

Kim's rowing is what set him apart from the ' disorganised types ' ... Kim clearly understood the difference between climbing and training for climbing ... where as most equated climbing WITH training ..... although of course now gym climber has blurred all that ...
