FT is a great place to learn basic mtneering skills. You can camp near Fed hut so when your tent packs it in during a storm you have shelter. Nice slopes near the hut to practice self arrest.
I second taking crampons and axe and know how to use them, especially self arrest. The summit ridge is not difficult but can get icy and it seems to be a long way down to the snow gums.
Have fun up there.

I'm sure Cheesehead will agree with me when I say that taking hiking poles, denali snowshoes and a snowboard will bring you far more joy than ropes, snow stakes and axes...I would also take my 10 pointers and a single 50cm axe for safety's sake.

Was up there last week, doing some intro mountaineering stuff with some mates. The amount of traffic
up bungalow generally negates the need for snow shoes, however with fresh snow or an approach via
razorback I would take skis/snowshoes.
Axe & Crampons are useful, as it is a waste to travel that far and not be able to summit. We needed
them 2 days out of 4. East face was good climbing with aretes in good nick, stable snow pack and small
cornices. Be very, very cautious.

All the best.
