Track closed Mitre Rock Deacon area

Hi All,

Louise Shepherd has asked me to post some info with regards to a track at Mitre Rock which has now been closed. CliffCare will be revegetating this in the next couple of weeks . We will probably have to mark it off as it still keeps getting used - The deterrants have been old branches covering access point -

Hi climbers and guides,

there is a new trackto Priest and Deacon wall at Mitre Rock. It is clearly signposted and goes up the rock buttress right of the old track.

The old track has been closed and will be revegetated. Please do not use it.

Take special care when going back to the car park from priest and Deacon wall to retrace your steps down the new track.

If you want to use the easy low-angled wall downhill from Priest/Deacon for teaching lead climbing, please approach from Priest/Deacon and not from the bottom.

Thanks to Stuart Matheson for organising the track closure and new track.

Purely in the interests of causing a storm in a tea cup how much damage do people think small parties of self sufficient climbers contributed to problems around Mitre as opposed to guided groups?

widewetandslippery is, as always, the victim of other people's actions. He never causes any erosion. It's all the other climbers who are the problem.

I wish I could think that way, it would be a lot more convenient.

wws: if you're still planning on complying with the restrictions, then great. actions speak louder than words. But words are all I have to go on.

gordoste as I stated I was raising a storm in a tea cup question. I think tracks are great. Rabbit like errosion from climbers stuffs up the bush as much as it makes access a lottery. I have actually "erroded" on purpose for making a pathway. My question was more who are the rabbits?

Mitre rock doesn't really see that much guiding use compared to dec crag or bushrangers. I'd take top rope groups there once in a while, as a last resort when everything else was busy or they'd somehow been around long enough to have climbed out all the usual suspects. So I don't think guiding groups are such contributing rabbits on this occasion. Have a look at the path up to Major Mitchell gully - no guided group ever goes there and it's trashed. Pharos gully only gets groups descending off tip toe, so only a once off traffic same as private groups descending, yet it's mank. Ditto watchtower. Nothing for kids in King Rat, but it's not in prime condition either. Central gully needs attention again - should we blame the walkers who are eroding it without even the ulterior motive of climbing anything? It's not being realistic to ignore the numbers of climbers generally and that all of us are contributing to the erosion.
