What actually happens if you're caught climbing in banned areas Neil?

Slap on the wrist or a fine... whats the go?

You piss off Parks Victoria and the relationship that they have with the VCC and the climbing community. It's not worth it - wait the relatively short time longer before it's opened and the track is clearly defined and erosion problems are minimised.
I, along with many climbers, want access to Rosea as soon as possible. So don't do anything that may put this access at risk. Is your access that important?

Don't even think about it. The whole area is completely banned for many kilomtres around (the roads are
gated and padlocked anyway). With so much other rock available its not like there is no other option. If
you want multi pitch routes i suggest Stapylton Amphitheater, Asses Ear, Hoolywood Bowl or Emu Rock.
All have stellar routes in the sub grade 20 multi pitch vien. If you want harder routes try Taipan, Eureka,
Crystal Palace - so many others as well!

There is no doubt that PV has the authority to control public travel through the Gramps, and i've got no intention of going to any of the banned areas, I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the consequences are.

i'm pretty sure they can, i've heard of mountain bikers getting fines for riding on non-vehicular tracks.

(bump)
What do we need to do to get Rosea opened again? How long has it been closed now?

I heard Chris Baxter has written letters to PV on this issue. Anyone know details?
Tracey, any news?

the word through the PV advisory committee (which I'm on) is that Rosea will be open in late spring/early summer. the delay is in fixing up all the tourist tracks around the Sundial that they want to do before they re-open the Silverband Rd

Hi All,

As John has said, there is work scheduled to do on a number of areas before they open up Rosea. Besides that, there is also some tree risk assessment work to do before we can get in there to fix up tracks and see what else needs to be done. Things have been delayed a bit as many of the tree risk teams called in after the fires finished up a couple of months ago. If all goes according to plan, a summer re-opening is on the cards. I know it seems like nothing is happening, but believe me, we haven’t let it drop. The upside of this is that our patience will have given the area the best possible chance to recover, and that, for the long term is a much better option. It’s all little steps at the moment but once things really start moving we’ll be doing our best to get it open as soon as possible.

It also gives us time to finish chopping all the old bolts.

I heard that some of the routes at Bundaleer got hammered by the fires (melted bolts, patina chunks come off and junk). Does anyone know if this is true, specifically touchstone pictures?

No, it is NOT true. All bolts are in the same condition as they were before the fires. There has been some
recent rebolting, but this was to fix rusty old bolts, not fire affected bolts. There has been no reported
large chunks of rock fallen off any popualr climbs (apart from perhaps in the first metre or so).
