What would you recommend using?

guidebooks, maps, forward planning and common sense, for starters
the bush is the bush because it's not full of humanity's detritus

I found the cairns did the job pretty well.. you just need to keep a sharp eye out for the track (poorly hidden with scrub or not) on the left that leads to the giant steps.
The tape used is helpful i suppose, but it does kinda look like trash caught in the trees... detracting a little from the serenity of the bush!?

Cairns work fine until someone scatters them. The problem with the Rosea descent is vandalism. Cairns won't survive vandalism.

moving rocks to create cairns removes niche habitat for invertebrates and small mammals, as well as creating potential erosion problems. everything we do has some impact sadly

Hi All,
The blocked access to the Giant Staircase has now been unblocked. The original plan to install signage directing walkers in the 'right' direction is still on track(no pun intended) and hopefully will be done shortly. Appreciation to PV for responding to the complaint promptly.
Cheers,
Tracey

Great outcome, thanks Tracey.
(I reckon the pun was intended though!)

Has consideration been given to marking climbers' trails in the way it's done in Yosemite, with a carabiner symbol unadorned by words? (Yes, a picture would help, but I don't have one). Even tho' I'd never seen it before, it was clear to me while looking for the way in to the base of a route (Munginella) that this track was the one I was after.
