Since I'm down there for the week and it's not going to be swimming weather. There's plenty of hills there, but there don't seem to be any crags.

Has anyone ever climbed any of the sea cliffs like Mt Defiance, etc?

Nah.
Do ya have the VCC guide to the area? - ‘cos it’s the bible.
A lot of climbing in that area isn’t sanctioned by tha authorities.
If it was me, especially re Mt Defiance, I’d go for it anyway.

Re not swimming weather - you like heatwaves huh?

Cumberland river had climbs on rotten rock but climbing banned same as the cliff near Aires Inlet . Parks seem to discourage climbing in heavily visited areas . The walk from Cumberland river on the coast towards Wye river is rated as difficult but needs low tide

What happens if you climb in a banned area? Fined?

At the very least, you make life difficult for the people trying to negotiate access to other parts of Victoria.

There's tons of rock around. Go find something that isn't banned.

Might have just answered my question. https://cliffcare.org.au/about/bannedclosed-climbing-areas/

"Climbers need to be aware that climbing in a banned area does have a consequence. If you choose to climb there you are effectively putting our climbing future at risk in other areas. When access issues rears its head, our past behaviour always comes under the microscope."

Is there actually a criminal / financial consequence?

Potentially. Some areas are private land and you run the risk of being charged with trespassing. I don't know for certain if Parks Vic can fine you, but I would not be surprised.

Either way, the consequence to access elsewhere is the biggest single motivator in my mind. Don't risk access to world class areas by going scrabbling on some insignificant chossy pile that people have asked you not to climb.

Thanks for the info. I took the cyclocross bike and hit the back roads around there.
