Hi all,
Bit of a random question here and wasn't really sure where to ask. Hopefully someone is able to help me out. I'm open to all suggestions!
I'm training for a mountain objective next year, but unfortunately (for this purpose) I'm stuck in Sydney. So I'm trying to find somewhere I can simulate what I'll be climbing as closely as possible.
What I'm looking for ideally is:
A piece of ground 50-80 degrees steep, as long as possible (I"ll do laps if not long enough - likely)
I'll be setting up a fixed line over it.
Ground doesn't matter - dirt, grass, sand or rock.
Pretty much anywhere within 2-3 hours of Sydney is fine.
Maybe someone walks over something like this in an approach to a climb?
As an example, the sand dunes at Cronulla will likely be used as they fit the general criteria.
If you need more info please ask!
Thanks
Chris

Lower Blue Mountains before you hit the major escarpments up higher would be a fit. Off end cabbage off tree road on up near Bowen mountain area few scree ridden not quite cliff slopes available. Six viewer is your friend https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/
Or Pm me your email address and I give you more details on possibilities.

Also think about Thurat Spires in the Kanangra Boyd, or some of the ridges coming up out of the Shoalhaven, near Bungonia etc.

I was thinking Bungonia Gorge may be suitable. We couldn't find the exit point for the walk out of there the first time I did the circuit walk (anti clockwise) and we ended up finding our way out, off route, up some pretty steep terrain. Plenty of scree and grabbing grass for handholds.

Ah, now you've reminded me. If you go upstream from the gorge at Bungonia until you get to a lovely big pool, there's a scree slope on the true left bank that's quite possible. From the top you hook around one of the walking tracks. Apologies for the lack of detail, it's been over 20 years since I've done that.
I'd be very surprised if there wasn't something suitable on the Illawarra escarpment, but that's a bit iffy as far as access goes.
Another possibility, though a bit further afield, is a firetrail up Bago Bluff near Port Macquarie. There are a few of them, and they're steep enough you tend to push a bike up and lock the brakes to take the next couple of steps. You could also look at the slopes to the sides of the firetrail if you wanted something a bit looser.

I'm surprised that the Sydney based master of approaches to esoteric climbs, WW&S, hasn't replied...
If he does. & if he mentions Nangar, then disregard it; as it's outside your tme-field criteria.
