Apparently community outrage prevented the cottages from being rented out. To be honest NPWS had their work cut out as all the cottages are in a pretty bad state.

Have you been up there recently? The govmint spent a shite load (of taxpayer money!) on restoring the lighthouse cottages so they could be rented out. On the scale of things I doubt a few well-heeled tourists overnighting up there was going to detract from the place. If anything, it may have directed more funds into the park.

Last year the Barrenjoey Cragcare regulars were allowed a sleepover in the (refurbished!) lighthouse — fun times for all. Dave Noble got a nice shot looking back over the isthmus. The perks of volunteering.

Some pics of the restoration work on Dave's blog here

"Well-heeled"? Does that mean they will build a road leading up to it so they can get the cleaning & catering trucks in, or will it all be dropped in by helicopter?

As a local (blow in pom of course), I don't see what the big deal is? The insular peninsular is already busy - what difference is 12 extra tourists for the weekend going to make? Other than a good income for NPWS to take good care of the place. It's NIMBYism aint it?

I was up there on Thursday shunting and there was a group of bush care guys hard at work which was good to see.

I think this is also about the cottages on station beach too. They are in a bit of a bad way (termites, rot, asbestos) - just like most of the older buildings here..

Kind of bizarre.
There's a number of similar places for rent in NSW, it'd eb a good way to get some funding through, and I cannot see how Stokes would lose any votes on it (he's the local member isn't he?), especially given the next election isn't for years.

Well, Balls Head is weird, but anyway... they do allow climbing at Barrenjoey, which is nice.

As far as NPWS going out of business... I reckon be careful what you wish for.
