I'm headed down this way this weekend for a surf/climb trip. Can anyone enlighten me about any free bush camping spots?

There is a nice enough spot on the way to the goldmine crag.

That did look like a nice spot but given the history of camping in Nowra, it's really obvious. Do people ransack your camp there too?

Any campsites in the Nowra area are at risk of ransacking. Even paid sites. It's just the sad reality of Nowra. The only place I haven't had issues with has been the zoo campsite, and I pick camp-sites close to the carpark so that there is lots of visibility.

I've stayed at the zoo and honeymoon bay the last few years and they were both fine. I actually really like the zoo campground. It's cheap and run down but there's been almost noone else there, wombats wander around and you can go swimming. The zoo itself was a fun rest day too

there is nowhere i'd leave a camp set up although i have. The new nowra crags offer good dirt road access to very nice spots. honeymoon bay is worth the camping fees

Google Yalwal camp ground
It's 20 - 30 mins past thompsons point, situated on a lake in a state forest. it's not 'bush' but it's free, it can be crowded but there's always a secluded nook. I wouldn't leave a your camp unattended for a day...
disclaimer: it can get a bit red neck - sometimes fun, sometimes f*cked....
