Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone had any knowledge on bush camps around crags in the South Island? Or just crag camping in general. Other than the Nelson area, it looks like most of Queenstown and Wanaka crags are private land that don't allow camping. Any advice would be great- my partner and I really don't like the idea of camping at the random camp grounds with families and babies over NY!
Cheers,

This PDF will give you the official sites. I've generally found them pretty quiet. If you want peace, don't camp in Queenstown on New Year's Eve like I did once.

What's wrong with families and Babies?
It's everyone else at campgrounds that make noise...

12 mile delta campground just out of Queenstown is always quite but the sandflys there have the ability to kill a small cow, Albert town campground in Wanaka is quite vast so easy to find a quite spot to yourself but you are out if town and on other side of Wanaka to the crags, but drag a picnic table into the river and it's a pretty perfect place to drink beer and watch the sunset after a day climbing.. Further south you have, of course Homer hut, but will need to book a spot, Long beach just out of Dunedin has epic climbing is a great place to camp up if you have a van

i camped at long beach near dunedin for a week under the pines. used the toilet at the cricket oval. water was a bit of a problem. hitched into the nearest town for supplies. very peaceful during the week.
stayed at a camping outside of wanaka on the lakeshore, north of town for a week. nice place, showers, kitchen, quiet. north of town if i remember correctly, on the road towards the mountains. glendhu bay i think
there was a shelter near the bouldering crag, castle hill. camped in the bushes 200 meters from the shelter, no issues except a wanker ranger and those f-king kea birds. parrots on meth.
the hut near pinnacles, mt sommers is luxurious. walk in is pain. bring loads of food.
you can camp at charleston. it's ok for a couple days.
two important thing to know about wild camping on the south island: SAND FLIES
