Big Hill access

I have a couple buddies eyeing off a day trip to Big Hill for some cruisy relaxed climbing.

According to the article on here:

"Please state clearly on your website that to go rock climbing on Big Hill in Longwood (near Euroa) is not allowed without permission!!! You state it is on private property, which is correct. I am getting extremely peeved by people driving on to my property and telling me they found the spot on your website."
Damian Murphy
General Manager

But try as I might, I can't find a way to get in touch with Damian to gain said permission. Does anyone have some sort of contact details, or do you just have to go door knocking and cross your fingers that it's the right house?

Cheers

Went up there today and noticed that two of the top anchors appear to have been chopped. The ones above "Nothing at all for Julia" look like they would have been pretty rusty, though the remains of the ones above "Tribulation" look pretty shiny. Is this a new thing ?

I contacted Strathbogie Shire Council about who owns the lands and this was their reply, "Further to your request for information on the landowner of property near Longwood East I can advise that the land is Crown Land and known as Big Hill.
You will need to contact DEPI Seymour office for further information - phone 57354300
The legal description you can give them is Crown Allotment 3D Section 1 Parish of Monea South."

I believe the problem is that while the climbing at Big Hill is on crown land, getting there (easily?) from the highway means you have to cross private land.

Hi Kubepau,

Teneriffe and Big Hill have a complicated history with some access sections being private land and some being crown. Drop me an email at cliffcare@vicclimb.org.au and I can pass on some contact details. I will also give Damien a call this week if I can, to revisit the issue and to clarify the situation.

Cheers,
Tracey

Thanks. It was a while ago now that we went, but I don't remember seeing any defined boundary between the hill and the Highway that would indicate which section is crown/private land.
From memory, we parked on the side of the service road, and walked through an open gate to get there.
I can't remember what the bolt situation was like either

No, there aren't any defined boundaries. Makes it tricky.

Just found out through my research that Damian Murphy has since passed away. I think I have a name for possible contact. Whether this person knows anything of the history of accessing Big Hill is unknown at this stage. I do think it is important though to do the right thing and discuss future visits and how we can lessen any conflict as the only way you can access the crown land is through the private. I will chase this up, but in the meantime if anyone is planning a visit, maybe consider giving it a wide berth until I have some concrete news on the best way to move forward/continue with access.

I didn't realize that the original poster had posted this in May and the reason the thread was up was due to someone querying chopped bolts. kubepau - I gather you didn't run into any of the owners or managers of the place?

Hi All,

Spoke to the new manager of the property you need to cross to access the climbing at Big Hill. Really nice guy and happy for climbers to cross. Would like to be contacted first. See details below:

Contact Craig O'Donnell – 0402 400 880

Happy for climbers to access Big Hill via crossing the property which is a horse stud and training facility. If going to Big Hill to climb, please contact beforehand to let him know. They have had issues previously with 4wd vehicles driving onto property and also shooting. Kangaroos and wallabies have been shot and left to die with some making down to the property. Because of this, the gate has now been locked so that vehicles can't get on. If climbers see anything like this happening or untoward, please also give Craig a call – he said it would be much appreciated.

NOTE: He said there have been a huge increase in the amount of snakes that have been seen – lots of browns. So take care.
Falcons nest there in September through to about November so don't access then.
