The Sydney University crew will be heading out to Blue Lake in a few weeks. Just wondering if anyone has gone out that way yet and seen the ice conditions?
It might still be too early, but given the good snow last week I thought maybe someone has at least skied over.

A mate of mine and his friends are actually out that way this week hoping to ice climb. I haven't heard back from them yet, but I should be able to tell you how things were looking by next week.

From what Mike Law-Smith says, the best ice is late in the season when the days a warm enough for melting and the nights then freeze the melt into ice. Apparently he used to head up from Canberra to Guthega at midnight when there was enough moon so as to hit Blue Lake early in the morning. It's a decent hike with gear - in, climb, and out in one day would be a big one.

Yeh simey bro fully agrees, but M9 bro prolly reckons that a big day is luxury, becos bak wen he wer a lad, daze had no meanin.
Kuu an BA support him in that mindset.
Stugang an Ed Slab are still arguing the toss.
Mods are waiting ta ponce on any infraction.
Chock newbies live in fear of posting due to possible roasting.
Meanwhile the passing parade continues tanks ta chocky.

As of yesterday there was lots of soft snow in the gullies, stag and elephant gully looked good and were un-corniced... Whatever the gulley is that always has the big cornice over it has (surprisingly) a big cornice over it and natural avy has come down it...
Ice doesn't look too good... Stuff on the right looks best, but you'd want to be there early after a cold night... Other stuff around Central gully doesn't look too good, biggest panel might be 3 metres high...
Someone had climbed stag with a T-slot half way, but stag looked in better nick for skiing!

we did grand traverse last saturday, no ice at all, unconsolidated snow, so made bit sketchy to get around. Then just got off mt earnslaw, didnt make summit, as over mon/tues heaps of snow fell but made bad avalanche conditions so we ended up backing off.
Been asking around everywhere for ice reports but seems nothings around. Hopefully by 30th theres some

In the last fortnight three incidents (two parties rescued and a third party deceased), testify to recent conditions on Bogong...

Hey Sabu,
Lots of snow down here, but it is very dry and gorgeous. The gullies at Blue Lake are full of snow and corniced but there has been no thaw to refreeze, yet. So, I'm guessing there wouldn't be much ice yet. The cliffs look pretty covered in snow, too. Skiing is awesome, though.

Heading down this weekend, camping at Twynham, climbing at Watsons and Sentinel I believe, but will also have a look at BL...
Apparently conditions are pretty firm up on top due to winds and sun over last week. Low avalanche risk..
Weekend forecast winds up to 50 k on Sat easing on Sun, maybe a bit cold - sounds ok...
Finally has anyone got any axes I could borrow for the weekend??? Or snowshoes??
Cheers

I've been watching the weather here in melbourne and the last few days of sun and clear skis in the hills suggests things could be quite firm up at Buller and beyond. Hopefully heading up next next weekend to check it out. Would still be interested if anyone has been in the area recently though.
Have fun Macca, I'd love to head up that way sometime but its a bugger of a drive!

You're welcome to borrow my old bamboo-shafted coonyard, though the round-trip to pick it up would be prohibitive.

I'm been following the weather pretty closely with the amateur snow forecasters over on ski.com.au.
It's going to be warmish until about next thursday the 31st when the next front comes through...hard to predict the snowfall could be not much to loads....but the air behind it comes up a huge fetch from down Antarctica way and looks REALLY cold into the start of August. 2nd/3rd could be a good weekend to go.
