Punters. Would appreciate any advice re easy/intermediate climbing be it trad, sport or bouldering, near the general Cairns / Cape Trib area. I could find some ok info on http://www.qurank.com/climbing/guides/cairns/cairns.html (eg. Barron gorge), but looks a little dated/vague. Any ideas whether there are any guides to the area?

The are a couple of guides on qurank for different climbing area's around cairns. Unfortunately a lot of the places have closed access (for various reasons).
If you feel like heading a couple of hours south there is the citadel near cardwell
Guide: http://www.qurank.com/climbing/guides/citadel/citadel.html
Townsville has some cool climbing and some fantastic bouldering (but is 4.5 hours south of cairns.

The stuff around cairns itself is ok. But access to the Baron falls, Turkey hill and Marten's Farm is all closed off, these were probably the more developed of the areas up there.

Thanks Tris - Have you been to Mt Stuart by any chance? Is it worth the drive? I'm there for a week, so it's possible...

I have been there. I think it is a fantastic place to climb, with trad, sport and mixed climbs.
I have been meaning to get back up there for a while but every time i'm in townsville my brother insists on taking me bouldering (which is also fantastic, but i'm a rope climber).
I do think it is worth the drive.

I think that you will find bouldering at Babinda.

Yere Mt Stuart is certainly a fantastic crag - quality is up there with any major area in Australia. 4 hours
of driving will reap great benifits - it's way better than anything else within a 1000km radius (unless you
like bouldering)

Mt Stuart is awesome and not too hot either. I've only been there a couple of times but the multi pitch stuff was top quality, steep and pretty 'out there' too!
I second Neil's comments - the drive is worth it.

Thanks Gents - Mt Stuart it is.
I'm going to try pick up a guidebook somewhere in Townsville, and failing that just pick the lines by sight, but if you have any suggestions on where to get one pls let me know.

Have you had a look here:

This was found by going to www.qurank.com and looking under the N QLD Crags section on the right (below the SE QLD Crags section.
