Just wondering if anyone had blasted up 'the staircase' recently to Cleve Cole Hut.
Is there ski-able snow at the moment ? - and if so how deep ?

Hi JDB,
I went up the Staircase about 3 weeks ago for a weekend hiking trip. Had a good look around from the summit for the best part of a day and at best the snow cover was about 10cm. There was snow down to about 1800m on the Staircase side, perhaps 1700m or a bit lower on the other side. I guess you could ski on it but I'm not sure it would be that much fun.
Things might have changed since then.

Should be good up on Bogong now, but I would imagine bulletproof in the morning.
Was up on Buffalo on Wednesday 2nd and there was enough to ski up to the Horn from Cresta. Very little ice, though some thin smears were forming on south facing areas, with the poor snow conditions there was not much banking out in the gully lines tho, woudl make for thin and exciting climbing.

Just to update, spent today skating at Falls and most of the gullies off the summit of Bogong looked to have a decent cover. Eskdale appears to be covered down to the treeline where it peters out quite quickly. If it rains this week instead of snows, a lot of it will disappear. As such I would highly recommend getting up there this week (weather's looking awesome too). Bloody hot up on the hill today, skating in a t-shirt and still sweating buckets.

hotham was good fun this weekend, and good cover (based on this season to date)
abounds at Howitt, Bogong and the Fainters.
I will certainly be making pilgrimages there in the next month
get out there now folks - it appears to be as good as this season is going to get

bogong is looking not too bad from a distance but i think it would be pretty marginal after the last few days of sunny sun sun. and we are also apparently expecting some rain coming in tommorrow! so changing again i would say. rain has been forecast for 8 days out of the next 14. the south side has the most snow of course, we saw it from the falls creek road yesterday. cross your fingers for a cold snap

Here's a fairly recent Bogong trip report from "Fish Boy" (as he's known here in Chockstone), over at www.ski.com.au - with pics:

Bogong has loads of snow left....if it doesn't rain much, I can see it lasting until the end of oct....
