I've looked at the NPWS site and seen the alert. Bummer about Balor Hut, I had some good times out of there.
What is the reasoning behind so much of the park being closed? Is it environmental / erosion, wildlife issues, or falling trees or something else?
I don't like the idea of our national parks being completely closed off without good reason. I'm not trying to come down on the NPWS but I'm interested what the justification is.

Gotta hand it to Monty, he called the staircase incineration back when they were building it. There's a couple of thousand hours of work wasted in a quite predictable manner.

I have it on good authority that the hut and water tank are fine. The toilet however is burnt into the ground. The fire around Dangar saddle seemed sporadic with some areas burnt to a crisp and others, like the camp site, untouched. Some of the stairs around the breadknife are also ok.
The top and northern slopes of Bluff Mt are torched, as is the base of CB and B spire. Most of the area around the Tonduron is untouched.

Thanks for the interesting info.
I was associated with the construction of that 'new at the time' dunny, and although it is close to Balor Hut, it was a little bit out there along a spur.
~> It sounds like the fire came up the gully and consumed it...
As an aside, I reckon that dunny had a better view than many million dollar properties in Sydney!
Heh, heh, heh.

Fires, floods and park closures
Last update: 17/5/2013 4:00PM
Closed areas
Closure
Following the recent bushfire Warrumbungle National Park is open in a limited capacity only.
Camp Wambelong is OPEN for camping.
Belougerie Split Rock, Burbie Canyon, Mount Exmouth and Whitegum Lookout Walk are the only walking tracks open.
Park entry and camping use fees are currently waived until further notice.
John Renshaw Parkway is open.
For more information please contact the Coonabarabran Area Office on 02 6842 1311.
Hmm.
Did anybody else notice the television footage recently of a shooter walking past the breadknife feature in the Warrumbungles, with obviously burnt out bush nearby, with a rifle slung over his shoulder and a dog accompanying him?
~> It would seem that the NP is not closed for all, and some rules/regs are flexible?

I was up there last weekend with family and can confirm park is mostly closed.....it still very burnt out...lots a gum tree shoots popping up through the ground but going to take ages to grow back.
Fire dint seem to reach bread knife and south of it, but everything north of the was torched and going to be closed for a while me thinks.

Spent Wednesday at cathedrals where black Saturday fires left the south entry nude. Regrowth is dense and ground cover thick. However as it was quiet we were able to here many tree falls during the day. My suggestion would be to stay out on windy days especially after a day or two of rain

WTF was a hunter doing in a national park? And how did a remote, not very popular, closed national park end up on the tv anyway?

I rang Coonabarrabran office.
They are allowing off track walking in the park now - along with please put your intentions in the logbook now to be found half way between the old visitors centre and the camp ground.
